Event Description

Navy Week is coming to Spokane from May 10th to the 16th!

To give you a little background on Navy Weeks, they are set up by the US Navy with the intent to reach out to cities all over the nation and give residents a chance to learn about the Navy. To allow people a good look into the diverse roles available in the Navy, these weeklong celebrations can include:
- Performances by the Navy Leap Frog Parachute Team and the Blue Angels
- Dive demonstrations and dive tanks
- SEAL fitness challenges
- Navy rock and ceremonial bands
- Flight and other interactive simulators
- Appearances by Admirals, divers and sailors
- Community service projects
- Events with local sporting teams
- Much more!

Vice Adm. Bruce W. Clingan, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy, and Rear Adm. James A. Symonds, Commander of Navy Region Northwest,
will serve as our leading spokespeople. Also participating are Sailors with significant ties to the local area.

N4M is not sponsoring this event, but if you're interested in coordinating something special with fellow N4M members, here are some Do's and Don'ts to keep in mind :)

DO get involved with Navy Weeks.
- You are encouraged to participate in Navy Week activities when appropriate.
- If you want to get involved with the Navy coordinators, your group should appoint a "spokesperson" to coordinate with the Navy. (This will alleviate multiple calls on the same topic.). The Navy Week points of contact can be found on www.navyweek.org. Go to the schedule and click on the city that you are interest in. The point of contact for that city's Navy Week will be listed.

DO NOT independently contact the flag officers or VIP participants involved in your town's Navy Week, but do work through the appointed Navy Week points of contact listed on www.navyweek.org

Thank you Angie for allowing us to be a part of the Navy Week in Spokane for Navyformoms.com. The VFW and everyone involved were wonderful and the boys had a great time! Meeting the VADM and the Cmdrs. was something they will not forget. The time spent with CMC of the USS Constitution was invaluable as he was also a CTR and provided excellent information.

It was nice to provide info on N4M to others in that venue and hopefully we made a positive impression on the VADM!

Thanks again and we'll keep in touch.

THANK YOU ladies for a great day of Navy Week festivities. =) I hope you all felt your time there yesterday was worth it. Just glad I had already eaten something before I left, because I never did get to eat any of that wonderful VFW breakfast! LOL (Too busy overseeing things and being pulled over to wait for or be introduced to someone!) It was so interesting to hear the questions and comments from all the Vets, such an honor to meet them, as well as our distinguished guest speaker VA Clingan, and the Commanders, with the Navy PR people and aides that accompanied them. :)

I loved that idahojeeps' twin DEP boys got to ask question of a Commander who was the same rating they have chosen; what a golden opportunity to hear about Navy life straight from the horses mouth and get any of their questions answered! :) Hope they had fun. Thanks for coming from ID to spend time helping us out!

We discovered that the Vice Admiral was raised in Bellevue and attended the U of W, a Husky fan! :-) He was one of two honorary Grand Marshal's of the parade later. Kim Cole, whose son Cpl Darryl Morris, was killed on Jan 21st, 2007 by an IED in Iraq, was the Grand Marshall. What an inspiring lady! Just brings me to tears when those Gold Star Moms and crew walk by carrying their full sized posters of their lost loved ones. Seems like the rows were longer than last year. Even one face on a poster is too many! Everyone stood and cheered, showing their respect, clapping until the very last one had passed. VERY touching!

I also got a chance Sat morning to reconnect with a friend I'd gone to church with here years ago, but lost contact with. Come to find out, she's been a Navy Mom for 5 years! She'd never heard of N4Ms, but had every intention of checking it out when she got home. :) (Her hubby even took my hubby's suggestion to look at Navydads. com too.) That's exactly why we did all this, to find Moms like her who thought they were alone. Can't wait to have her join us and work alongside her to support our Sailors on and offsite.

I also felt the day was a success not only in terms of getting some great exposure for the website and our part in it, but also in terms of making good contacts with others in our area who are doing wonderful things for our Reserve and Active Duty Sailors. We have all been invited to become members of the Local Navy League (I have applications if anyone needs one); and the Ombudsman of the Navy Outreach Support Center (NOSC) along with her friend, the Ombudsman for the Seabee Group that was recently deployed, are both enthusiastic about getting their gals/groups together to work with local members of N4Ms and other Navy loved ones in the future. Had a really nice chat with each of them just before we tore down the booth in the park and we all watched the Lilac Armed Forces Day parade together. What a wealth of information, warmth and encouragement they each are!

The sun shone all day, temps were in the high 70's, maybe even low 80's. Couldn't have asked for a better day in the Inland Northwest! The whole Navy Brass/entourage was apparently very impressed and pleasantly surprised at the good weather and warm local welcome. Some expressed a desire to spend some more time exploring the Pacific NW. =) It appears that VA Clingan will be in the Seattle area in June and there are some big plans involving the CNO of the Navy in conjunction with the Seattle areas Seafair Activities, so keep your ears tuned for more info to come on that!!

Well, better go get the photos we took downloaded! Wish I'd taken more, but the Pubic Affairs gals promised they would share too. Keep an eye on Navy.mil for reports on our event to pop up! Molly, from our MAS Adopt a Sailor Group called from Oregon and left a message to say she had seen "our" Spokane event all over the news (about once an hour) on NW news channel! :-) All in all, it was a great, busy, amazing experiance. It was such a joy to spend some of it with you all! Thanks again

p.s. have them wiki "Vice Admiral" and then google him or just go here:

Pays to do your homework and know something about who you are dining with! :)

LOL Yep, to them that's like saying the Vice President of the US wants to have breakfast with them!!! :D I know my son felt like that once when he had to challenge the Captain of RTC Great Lakes for her ID. :) They'll have some stories to share with their fellow DEPmates at the next meeting! Not sure if my two younger boys are more impressed by the Vice Admiral, or the all you can eat free large spread the VFW is putting on! ROFL

Tell the boys he puts his pants on one leg at a time too. Just breath and bend your knees a little. :) They may want to dress a little nicer, as the LT. mentioned they would all be in their dress uniforms. Don't need to put on airs though, just show respect for them and their positions. See you there!

So the boys just freaked out when I told them that the V. Admiral is sitting at out table.

Less than 48 hours to go and I'm realizing this may not be as low key as I thought. Apparently, Vice Admiral Clingan (see intro above) will be sitting at OUR table at breakfast on Sat morning!! We have been instructed (asked) to save him a seat. :) So, our presence there, especially between 10:30 and noon, is less about our being available to talk to the Future Sailor families in that venue, (the invitation has been extended, but it's unknown how many may attend. Definitely will be Vets though) and more about our having a chance to share our stories and ask questions of someone in the know. He wants to hear from us, average, everyday Navy Moms and families, about our experiences and about our Recruits/Sailors! They say he is pretty laid back...for being a 3 STAR Vice Admiral! Hope he brings his appetite, and his extra set of ears, because we know how much we all like to chat! LOL Don't forget to bring a few photos of your Sailors/to be! (We have one mom who is bringing her two DEPpers) Even the LT. who we've been working with (she's an officer, but her brother is at GL right now in A school) is bringing HER mom. =)

BTW: The local Recruiters offices are supplying us with Proud Navy parent bumper stickers, safe tattoos and other goodies to hand out later down in the park. :D I'm really getting excited now! Can't wait!!

p.s please pray for my sick hubby. :(

So ladies, we are one week from our big day of Navy Week activities! :D This time it will be pretty low key and grass roots. Don't really know what to expect, as this is a new thing for us and we are a small contingent, sofar. Hoping to build our local network through the exposure we get. :-)

It's probably not likely that Spokane will be chosen to host again next year, but I've been assured that there will still be local activities of some sort planned in support of Navy Week anyways. We will have more heads up and more time to plan for those next year. So, let's just get our feet wet this year, be available as needed and as we can be and most of all, get to know one another and have fun encouraging other local Navy Moms, future and current Sailors and their families! THANK YOU for being willing to be involved in some capacity. I look forward to next weekend and spending time with you all! Have a blessed and relaxing Mother's Day. You all deserve it!!! =)

Mo8-I didn't think you sounded rude at all, just a very busy Mom and wife who has wisely learned not to say "yes" to too many things and not try to be in two places at once! Still trying to master that one myself! =)

I'll send that e-mail to you all later today and put an update post here too. :)
Comment by momof8 on May 5, 2010 at 10:29pm
I'm really sorry, I diddn't mean to sound rude...I was just remembering that I think I was asked to help with a women's event on Sat. afternoon at 2. So I meant overcommitted elsewhere, not to you! I think I could help 10-2...I could be a bit late for this other thing. I will probably be done around 4:30 if you need help.
Comment by AngieFromWA:BUDS Mom/ HM alumnus on May 5, 2010 at 7:40pm
Sorry Mo8, I wasn't getting notifications of comments on "My Events"! Didn't know you had commented or that someone new has RSVP'd. :) I am sending a private email to you girls I met on Sat. w/more info.

I am also meeting with the Recruiter tomorrow morning. She's going to give me the final 411, including the time that the Booth downtown will be available to us. Having met you, I can see how you would easily get overly booked up and don't want you to feel pressured to do more than you reasonably can! :) That's partly why we decided to focus our energies on Saturdays activities only, mostly the breakfast/panel discussion from 9-12, and the N4Ms/Navy loved ones Booth later in the Park.

I was thinking maybe we could overlap at the breakfast, some coming from 9-11, others from 10-12?? I will need to leave before noon to go make sure everything is set to go w/the Booth. Perhaps we can take shifts in twos (at least) on the booth? kayfam wont be able to help with that portion. I am planning to come back later, (after my boys' 3:30 piano recital) close down the booth and stay for the parade. I know wamom said she is staying too. We will have a Post Falls Mom and potentially a Walla Walla Mom too, just not sure yet what activities and time slot they will slide into. Would you be able to do any of the Booth times (will get back with you after tomorrow) in the afternoon, especially while I'm gone, or is there another soccer game, or logistical issues and such?
