My sailor is probably headed to Kuwait soon. (I won't believe it, until it actually happens, though). I was just wondering if anyone had a sailor that is there now, or has been in Kuwait recently. Would like some information - did he/she like it? What did they do there? Did you go visit (haha like I could afford it on a teacher's salary)? How did you get to communicate with him/her - how often?
Derek is going to be on an oil rig. Does anyone know if they stay on that rig, or get to go to land every once in a while?
Thanks for any information you could provide.
Brenda
Funny, I just learned all this stuff about Guam - and then he changed to Kuwait!!

For my Army son, Kuwait was a holding pattern for getting into and out of Iraq. He did enjoy it and the accommdations were much nicer than Iraq. He didn't get his computer until he entered Iraq, and we could email, and instant message there. I know that it is an alcohol free country. I will ask him for more information.
My husbands friend who is like a brother to us.was in Iraq for 8 months.First he had to go to Kuwait.Thats where they train them for Iraq.He really couldn't give me any details. He still doesn't like to talk about it so we don't push it.But He did tell us that Kuwait is a safe zone,as safe as it can be over there and they did have a way to e-mail family, clean place to sleep and ammenities. He got to e-mail us and his daughter almost every day.I sent several packages there and he loved it and he shared the cookies with other troops. So best thing you can do for him while there is e-mail often and send care pacakges.Oh and most important pray.Oh not every soldier has to go to Iraq from there so hopefully he will stay in kuwait.
A heady mix of market bazaars and gleaming skyscrapers along a glistening coast.

Kuwait is your prototypical oil-rich state, and travellers looking for a relaxed entry into the Muslim world can look forward to wandering around mosques, souks and other sandy traces of bygone Bedouin days. Behind the glitzy opulence lies a deep sense of traditional values and warm Arabian hospitality.

Brenda, do you think we could just send a note to his commanding officer that Kuwait is just a tad too far for a Navy for Moms' gathering?! The MAs certainly seem to get multiple orders so until they have those orders in his hands - I will be hoping for a location a tad closer to you.
Hi Brenda, My son was in Kuwait last year for about 5-6 months. He was in charge of Security and safety on the base, had his name on some sign and all. I guess he liked it, said it was hot. We usually communicated when he called to say hi.But of course he talked to his dad more than me, We were also planning his wedding while he was over there. He got home on the 20th of August, (my wedding anniversary )he got married 6 days later. Right now he is in Guam. His wife is back here in NYS. staying with her parents while he is over there. I really think both Kuwait and Guam are a tad too far for a N4M get together. hope that helps. I do believe it is safer than Iraq.
I worked with a man who was in the Navy as a Nuclear officer for 11 years and had gone into the Navy Reserves. After he had worked as a civilian for about a year, he was recalled and was sent to Kuwait for a year. I believe he was involved with Customs and with the escorting of convoys to and from the ships as I understand it. He said that he always stayed on base--not venturing out too much. He always carried a weapon when he went off base. He was able to communicate quite often via email. He and his family did some kind of video conferencing which had set up before he left as he had two small children at home. He was sent to Dubai for a short time before they shipped him back to the U.S. He said Dubai was very nice and he enjoyed not having to constantly carry a weapon with him. The food was good in Kuwait as it is on all the Navy installations I have heard of. What kind of job does he have?
Hi Brenda, My son is currently in Kuwait. I think the location differs on comfort, etc. Jeff sent a pic of a thermometer.. 132 degrees; lots of sand storms where he is; work 12 hours a day, and he's only told us of a one day trip to a city. We keep in touch with an ocassional telephone,,,but Myspace Skype IM is great!! I can leave messages for him,,and he gets back to us every 3-4 days.
The past few weeks the internet has been a "pain"... alot of it isn't getting to him. It took us 3 days to get the info about his brothers new baby/ and he still can't receive the pictures. Where Jeff is,,,the food is "ok" and he requests alot of the meals or snacks that he can eat in his cubacle. He's counting the days to come home,,,
No,,we didn't visit and don't think I would even bother. From the sound of his schedule it wouldn't be worth it for us,,,, we'll be here for him as soon as he gets stateside. In fact,, we're hoping to get to Maine to greet him the day they fly home to the USA.
As I said,,,I think alot of this depends on the area of Kuwait that they are in.
When my son was in Iraq we used Myspace IM, it was great. We could communicate better than when he was in Germany (terrible reception). I used to send him food using Food for Troops, also you can send food from Amazon.com
My nephew was there recently. He is an MP in the Navy. He was responsible for the weapons. Sailors had to check out weapons from him and check them back in with him. He said it was like what you see on the show MASH. They lived in tents some of the time, and in a dorm some of the time. He said it was very hot and they have these huge spiders that follow you around trying to stay in the shade your body creates. He didn't mind it there, but he was glad to return to Bethesda. He could communicate freely by email and phone calls. He didn't say anything about feeling in danger, but he probably wouldn't tell us something like that. He wouldn't want us to worry. Hope this helps.
Hey Brenda...did you watch Carrier...there was a part of it where the Sailors were guarding an oil rig! If you have Tivo or a DVR -I suggest you record it..well worth it...
I do not have any experience with this and............I kinda hope I never have to face this....Prayers of strength for you and your family!!!!
My daughter in laws- brother is in Kuwait! They do talk on the phone....{he is a Marine}
Scroll all the way up - and on your top left you should have a little person and a mini-envelope. Click on that envelope . There should be your PM's. CC
I asked Derek what he wanted for his 20th birthday, August 1. He texted me back and said to "fly to Kuwait" - I immediately called him - and yep, he is leaving for Kuwait on his 20th birthday.
I got to drive about 5 hours to Mississippi to see him today. We brought him a cookie cake and a small present. (Didn't know what he could take to Kuwait!) I am going to take hims to a nice dinner before driving back home tonight. uugghh - more tears - except I HAVE to drive!!!

He is down at the beach swimming with a couple of boys that came with me,
so - - - of course, I got on N4M's!!!!
