In my daughter's letter she mentioned only having two hours after graduation to spend with us, as this is in her first letter home does she really know this soon? Does that mean she is a grad and Go? We booked the room for the entire weekeknd thru Monday and are not changing "just in case". Just looking for other mom's opinions or experience here.

My son was Grad and Go on Aug 1st, He had to be at the airport by 1 that same day but his flight didn't leave until 8pm that night so we went to the airport and spent all that time with him, but you cannot drive him but you can meet him there..But to get to the terminal you will have to go and get a special boarding pass, make sure everyone has their id's..It make take about a hour in line but it's well worth it..His flight changed terminal's 3 times..Make sure you wear comfy shoes to O'Hara airport, you will be walking alot...Good Luck !!!
Carol,

My daughter graduates September 26th and she stated we have the entire weekend with her. I am not sure when we can pick her up in the morning of the 27th but she has to be in and in bed by 10pm. After graduation I am not sure when my daughter can come with us, if it is right away or not but I do know we can see her after that. She doesn't leave for more training until that sunday. I do know that my daughter's plans of how long she is to be gone keeps changing so maybe that will is the same with your daughter. We have a close realtionship with the recruiter. Maybe your recruiter can tell you some info?
Hello all and thanks for all the great advice and comments!!
In searching this forum and with all the phone calls that came yesterday from our kids I'm beginning to wonder if they all aren't told "2 hour that's it" not to get thier hopes up or somehting like that. I really don't have a clue and her recruiter said he wasn't sure either due to the fact that she might change jobs. SO who knows... I'm just gonna take what I get and be happy !! :) We have reservations thru Monday and I am not changing them.
After hearin g her voice I don't care if I get 10 minutes or two days- I'm there!! Hail, sleet, snow, rain, floods, RDC'S, chiefs, No one will keep me from seeing my babygirl!!
( :) granted they might put a time limit on it. heehee:) )
That's right - go, treasure the PIR and hope for the best!

IF she stays in GL for school - it is a safe bet that you will get to spend the weekend with her. If she flys out - it depends on when they actually send them.
My son just PIR's on 9-12 and was grad-n-go for GL. We got to see him right after the ceremony for about 20 minutes and then he had to go pack and do his paperwork. He called us about 4 to find out the name of the hotel we were at and then we went and picked him up at the base. He did get to spend the entore weekend at the hotel with us, sleeping over and all and had to check in by a phone call each night to the base. He needed to be back at his barracks by 9Pm Sunday night--VERY hard saying goodbye again!!! But this time he got to keep his cell phone and some civilian clothes we brought down with us for him to hang out in in the hotel. Hope this helps!!
My son is graduating 10/24 and I got his graduation packet yesterday. According to that it's only 2 hours unless they go to A school right there at Great Lakes. If they stay then they have processing for a few hours and then I believe they'll have more time. But if they have to ship of somewhere else for A school the pamphlet sure makes it sound like they won't get any more time after 1 p.m. on the day of graduation. I haven't heard from my son yet as far as where his A school will be held. I'm scared to make plans. They say they might not be able to graduate and we might not even find out until the last minute. Looks like refundable plane tickets are quite a bit more expensive. But I'm not researching just yet. Anybody else have graduation canceled? That would be the biggest bummer. For him and us.
Yes, my son had to be delayed by 2 weeks. It wasn't easy but he has found that it has made him a better, stronger person thru all of it.
He will be graduating next week now!!!

I don't know where you are from, but I have bought plane tickets from Southwest and they are re-usable later within a years time. So you could look into that.
I would wait another couple weeks tho before booking for flights. You can always book for hotel and car without paying so I would do that now.
Hi All:

My son was "Grad n go". His RDC told them they were all flying out right after PIR. Then I got the invitation and it said "Grad n go" but it was a little confusing. When I talked to Matt he said he was flying out to San Diego right after PIR. We had two hours together at RTC. We could have had some time together at the airport, but my flight left on time (about 3pm) and his was delayed for hours due to bad weather. Plus we were in different terminals. And you or your recruit won't know what airlines they are on...it's what I call "flying by the seat of your pants"

Matt is still shaking his head and wondering why I flew from Tucson to Great Lakes just to see him graduate.....wouldn't have missed it for the world!
I understand what you are saying ,they are so grown up they start trying to protect us, My daughter said mom do not worry about "A" school most families only come for boot camp. She did not want us to waste the money. Well we went and i was glad I did. It was smaller but still nice and she had a few days of leave so she had reach the point she could be off base. She went back to do her watch then she came to our hotel and we bought her a laptop. I would not have miss boot camp, most families don't but do not let them tell you no one comes for "A" school. If you can do it is smaller and it was wonderful because now it might be a year before we are together again. Spend any free time you can get together because that time will be priceless to you in the future.
This is not necessarily correct. Out son was to be a grad n go but, he had to go directly back to quarters and wait for orders. He called us at 5:00 pm the day of graduation and was able to spend the entire weekend at the hotel with us. He had to call in at 8:00 each evening to muster but did not have to be back at base until 11:00 pm Sunday evening. It was great!
The Navy will call it Grad N Go when the recruits are moving across the street for "A" school. If your son was Grad N Go his RDC or the Chief PO would have let him know he was flying out of O'Hare airport on Friday afternoon. If you know your recruits rate, you should know where his "A" is. Or you can call his recruiter and find out where his "A" school is.
My son is grad and go. We were also told that we will only have about 2 hours with him at Great Lakes after PIR. We reserved our room at Navy Lodge for the whole weekend, just in case. Then we made a reservation for a room near O'hare for Friday night and plan to fly out Saturday morning. That way we can follow him to the airport and hopefully spend more time with him. Either way it will be cancel a night or two at Navy Lodge or change return flight from Saturday morning to Monday. We don't want to miss a minute with him!
