I am new to this site and thank you for having me.  My son who is prior service Navy is in the process of joining the reserves.  He is 40 yrs old and had an RE-1 discharge back in 96.  He got in touch with a recruiter and filled out all the paperwork and everything seemed like it was going to go smoothly.  Went to MEPS for the over 40 physical.  His BP was high when they first took it 144/90 so he went through everything and they took it again the 2nd and 3rd time around 11:00am and he was in that same range so they DQ'd him.  Take in account that he was Fasting because of the blood test with no food or sugar since 7pm the evening before and probably stressed by that time?  His recruiter put in for a waiver and he went to his doctor and had 3 seperate readings of 120/80 on three seperate days.  Doctor wrote a letter stating he was diagnosed with "White Coat Syndrome" and required no medication.  That letter was submitted with the waiver and within 2 days they said the waiver came back Disqualified.  He was so bummed that how can a doctor have a DQ from MEPS and a letter stating that he didn't have high BP sitting in front of him and say they didn't need him?

I told him to complain to his recruiter because they told him he had nothing to worry about with the BP waiver because it showed he didn't have it.  Can he appeal it?   I know the Navy is overmanned now but why wouldn't they want to bring in an E-5 that has experience and no other issues and give him a shot?

Thank Judy.    He is just trying to do the right thing for his family so if he ever got laid off again then he will at least have some benefits to hold onto.  The Navy on their website highly promotes prior service and the benefits of going back in, but if they don't need any then the recruiters should just be up front and not waste all that time going to MEPS and give them a call when they open the ranks again.

He said he is going to contact the Zone Supervisor for that region and have them take a second look at his enlistment package.   By reading it seems like waivers take months to get back and why would they know something only after two days of submitting the waiver?  Something doesn't make sense.
