Can't get a straight answer from his recruiter, but that's nothing new. My son jus arrived at bootcamp last night. After graduation, (mid Sept?) He'll spend another 8 weeks in Great Lakes before A school. Will he be able to come home for Christmas? If the schools shut down, how long will he get? This has been a really hard transition. We miss him so much.

Some commands do permit Sailors to take leave over the Christmas break and some will not permit them to go in the hole on leave. Since he will have at least 10 days on the book by then, he MAY be allowed to take leave. The Sailors cannot take leave at the same time, so he may not be home for Christmas, but could be home sometime between 12/12/2015 and 01/03/2015. Those are the dates that I expect to be included in the holiday stand down, but your then Sailor will know more once he arrives for training.

Check your My Page.

You have been so incredibly helpful. Thank you. How early do you think he would know? Thank you again, I feel so lonely and helpless.

In many cases, a Sailor can apply for leave 45 to 60 days before the leave is wanted and will know if it has been granted 30 days before.

Do you mean 8 weeks for A school?  I'm a little confused.  Taking holiday leave from school is completely different than taking it in the fleet.

He would be in A school. Probably starting right before Thanksgiving. We have a trip planned (booked before he got his contract). Wondering if we'll be able to go.

If he is in A school, he gets to take leave during the stand down.  It will burn his leave days so he doesn't get to take leave after school though.  Also, if the trip is out of the country (cruises usually), he would need special permission and that is much more difficult to come by.  So the answer is a strong maybe yes.

Thank you for your fast reply. No cruise, Orlando the week of Christmas. I don't know what I would do without you ladies. My heart hurts so bad.
