My fiance is currently in Boot Camp in Great Lakes, and will be graduating in a little over two weeks. He's heading to Pensacola, FL for A-School. While in A-School, we plan on getting married, just at the courthouse. (Then planningour formal wedding later). After we're married, will I be able to move to to Pensacola to live with him while he finishes up school? Or will I have to wait until school is over & we get stationed? HELP!

The Navy won't help you move for A school unless it's a certain length, 6 months or more I believe? But not completely sure on that. You can pay to move yourself out there but honestly most A schools are so short it's not worth it for what it costs. Also I don't believe you'll be able to get base housing during A school and even if you move there he may still have to live on his ship on base anyway.

I was told that if you were not married before bootcamp that you cannot pay to get moved down there. Idk if its true or not but like abuon said the a school has to be over 6 months or 20 weeks.. one of the two? I have heard both. and like she said it might not be long enough to be worth it. What is his rate? you can look up the current average hold time and then his contract says how long the actual school is that will tell you how long he might be there (might bc you never know!) He would have to live in the barracks until phase 3 I think is what is is in Pensacola. There is a group for that a school hop on and ask the ladies the current state of things down there. He has to fill out a live ashore chit and get it approved to live off base. the ladies on that page know which ones can  and cant do that as well, I got married to my husband in A school in Pcola. I stayed home saved up the BAH and used it for us to get a down payment on a car when he graduated. If you have any questions you can PM me.

His rate is IT. I'm not against staying home, I'm just wondering because I miss living with him! :)

Right now, he's being told that he'll be A-School for 19 weeks, but wants to stay for an extra 8 week program (i forget what it's for!) I have a place now & I'm okay with being married and being apart during school. But, if i can, i wanna be with him as soon as possible! :)

I'll definitely check out the Pensacola page!

I understand! Believe me!! :) I know some girls just get so focused on getting there for A school they just ignore advice. If it works for you then I am very happy for you but if not then just know that it will all be ok and you can get through it :) I wanted to be him too but for us it just worked better to wait. Just look at all your options. Also know that they move him from him Home of Record for his first PCS, there is a way to change it but idk for sure what all the rules are and whatnot! :)

I know we'll make it through! :) We just want to get a head start at looking at all the possibilities...not making any for sure plans yet, of course :) thanks so much!

welcome :) again if you have any questions feel free to ask I got married there, and a friend of mine got married down there and moved down there

Yes, you must be married before A school to qualify for a paid move, and yes, the school must be a certain length (it changes the type of training orders to PCS). That means before boot camp, because they have their orders to A school ready when they depart for basic.  School time to qualify for an accompanied move?  6 months is the estimate, although 20 weeks was the last I heard.  Every school is longer than the weeks given, there's always more training, indoc, hold times, and so on.

Yes, married sailors must request to Live Ashore, and yes, they must still earn their liberty privileges first.  There may also be complications with shipping household goods from FL when they do receive orders.  If you move yourself down there and leave everything behind "at home", well the Navy will only ship from one place when the time comes. You may be stuck with furniture in another state in storage the Navy won't move for you.

Make sure when you hit the FL group that you get concrete information, such as which offices to contact, up to date info, and that the ladies giving you info have sailors in the same rate/school.  Every school command can very on policy, even at the same base.

Even if the school is said to be 19 weeks and ends up being 20+ weeks...the USN will NOT pay to move the familiy to stay with the sailor (if they where married prior to bootcamp)

Yep best thing is he checkes what is up when he gets to the base.  Also just 'cause he wants the extra school does not mean he will get it.

I know how you feel! My husband is in San Diego for A- and C-school.... It just worked out that we were able to do a DITY move while he's still in A-school and we're actually on our way out there now! It is hard being apart!

I know! I'm not holding my breath & I'm prepared to be here while he's in school. But if there is a way to be closer, I'm taking it! :)

Hey girl there's nothing wrong with the courthouse! That's what we did because I was on your shoes! I moved to P-cola a month after he finished boot camp (you have to pay for your own expenses) but once he receives orders to PCS somewhere else for Permanent Station they will pay you to move you! So once I got to P-cola he requested his command the authorization to marry (yes, they have to get a permit) and we went to the courthouse. Our BAH (basic house allowance) which is $1056 a month pays for our rent and utilities + some food!!! and because he lives at home now his pay checks are even higher since they dont deduct feeding him on base (called BAS). Inbox me if you have any questions

My husband's C-school is a year and a half so for us there was really no point in waiting since I would be moving out there anyway! Well good luck with everything I know you'll figure it out and you will love PIR soooo much I'm sure you're beyond excited.... It really is worth the wait once you see him :)
