Hi, I'm hoping someone can help. My son finished A school in August and was sent to Bremerton, WA. He said he has asked several times for a mailing address, but has been told that because his boat(sub) is in drydock he is to get a "ride along" on another boat so he can qualify. He has not been given an address because that ride along could "come at any day". I am very frustrated that I have not been able to send him mail or packages & with Christmas coming, It's breaking my heart that he won't be able to get any presents-even if it's just some beef jerky! I don't know where to get an answer & I don't want to cause trouble for him. Surely there is somewhere he can get mail. Any suggestions?

I had a similar situation with my daughter, it was not easy getting packages to her on base, if the squad didn't retrieve their mail it could take weeks. Our solution was to ask another sailor who lives off base if you can use their mailing address. She had some good friends that she trusted that were living off base and I shipped packages to their address, we never had a problem, and because they didn't have FPO addresses you could use UPS and track the packages. Ask your son if he has any friends in his command that live off base, see if its an option for him. At some point he will get a fleet address but it may work using another sailors address for one or two packages.
Thanks so much for answering Kathy! I wasn't sure if he was telling me the truth or he just didn't want to deal with the hassle. This site is so nice to have! I know I'm not alone.
We had to mail my son's birth certificate to him so he could get a passport in case he had to fly commercial to rendezvous with his ride-along. He had me send it to his "sea dad"'s adddress. I asked if I could send packages there & my son said no, only official navy business was allowed. I guess even if we were able to send something now, it most likely wouldn't get there in time for Christmas anyway. I'll just have to keep accumulating the stuff & he'll have Christmas whenever he gets his FPO. The last time I spoke with him, he said that he should know something by the 20th as to if/where he is going.
Happy Holidays to you & yours!
Another option could be but it would be up to you, there are a lot of Navy moms in that area, one of them may be able to get a package to your son, they could live close to the base, and would be more than happy to help.
Happy Holiday to you too, hope it all works out.
