Introduce yourself, we are getting so big! I can't keep up. As short or long as you'd like. I want to learn everyone's names and find out about your sailors - where they are going, what SHIP they are on, on base or on the seas, and what you hope to get out of this.

Hello! My name is Kathy and my daugher is Sara Jane. She will PIR on 8/29 and is at GL now, DIV 311, Ship 09. She will be AE/CF (or so she thought when she left here. She floored us when she started talking about going to talk to a recruiter! When she chose her rate, we were floored again! She thought it would be interesting and something she could do if she wanted to get out after her 6 years. She joined for the "drug free" enviornment and the travel. Letters from her say she's lovin' every minute of BC and doing very well :) Her brother followed right behind her the following week and is DIV 849 SHIP 05 with the other SEAL and spec ops people. He'll PIR on 9/5, the Friday after Sara does! :) Glad to have found this place so I can learn about what Sara Jane will be doing!
Welcome Jennifer and Kathy, Wow 2 kids in BC at once, are you going to be able to go to both of their PIR's? It is such a great event. We look froward to hearing more about your sailors in the months to come.
Hi Jackie, Yep, I'm going up for Sara Jane's PIR 8.29 and will stay the week so I am there for Ty's on the following Friday, 9/5 :) My younger two will miss part of the first week and all of the second week of school, but oh well!!! Not everyday your older sister AND brother stand proud and be the best role model you'd ever want in front of your kids :) I think it will teach them FAR more than the 4 walls in a school could ever teach! It will be a very proud day for both and I'm not sure how I'll hold up!! It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it!
I agree Kathy, this will be a great learning experience for them.Maybe they could write a report about it for school. It is an awesome experience. I was in the navy 30 years ago and I remember my Graduation from boot camp but it was just so much different watching my own son do it.Congratulations to your family it will really be a special time.
Hi, I am Alice and live in No. California. John PIR'd last Friday, 7/25. He is 19.. He will be an ET.
He should be moving to the other side of GL tomorrow (Wed) and then start his training. He will remain at Great Lakes until March 2009.

I have already met a few of you on this site and it has been great. John has a sister in high school (junior this fall). We all were able to attend his graduation and it was an awesome event.

Not sure if he will make it a career. My Dad is retired 22 years Army and I swore I wouldn't be married to anyone in the military. Now with John in the Navy.....I understand some the "military" stuff but am thankful for this site to fill me in on the rest.

I am so proud of him and all of our sailors.

Alice
Hey Alice, what part of N. Cal are you in? We used to live in Vallejo - back in the days that my husband was stationed at Mare Island. We love the area but love the housing, taxes and traffic better in Atlanta! Did I actually say the traffic?!! lol - that was the case when we first moved here, now it's a different ballgame!
Hi Everyone - I hope I am in the right place. My son, Daniel, PIR'd 7/18. We are very proud of him. He is also in "A" school in the Great Lakes. He is on the ship Enterprise. He says it is the oldest building there but he really likes it even though it does not have air conditioning. He just finished his "P" days for "A" school and he is suppose to officially start his "A" school next week. He is in "A" school for Damage Control/Fire Control. Do I have the right group? Ha! Hope so. I would love to hear from those of you that have had some experience with "A" school in the Great Lakes. Thanks!
Hi Tammy and welcome. Do you know what your son's rate is? Damage Control and FCs are two different rates if I understand correctly but they may go thru the same A school. I think Nancy can set me straight -

Our son is in A school and his class is made up of FCs, ETs, GMs and ICs but since it is computer based, they are all working on their own modules.

There are actually a number of classes before A school begins, they start with indoc for a week and then SCC for two weeks this is basic seamanship class. From there they move to ATT which can last 10 weeks for the FCs but I'm not sure of the time frame for other rates and finally they move to A school.

Next time you talk to your son, ask him what his rate is and regardless...you are welcome here. Just want to make sure that you are getting information that applies to your son.
Mary - you're correct, Damage Control (DC) is a distinctly different ratING from FC.

Tammy - it's very common for people to think that those in the Firecontrolman (FC) rating handle fires and the like. But FC's handle weapon systems and related electronics in the weapon systems. DCs are the ones who put out fires and deal with other hazards on the ships. So ask your son if he's a DC or an FC. But it sounds to me like he's a DC.
That's what I was thinking Nancy but knew you could explain it better. Thx!
Hi everyone- Thanks for clarifying all of that for me. My son, Daniel's rate is DC. He has completed endoc and has started his class modules. He is suppose to finish by the end of October. He just found out this week that after he completes A school, he will be going to San Diego, CA, Hawaii, Japan, Mayport or Norfolk. He would like to have one of the first three but I don't know how much of a choice he will have. Thanks again for all of your help. Talk to you soon.
Hi I am Lois and my son is 23, he is going to be an FC. He just had PIR on 8/01. He said he would be in A school until March, which is good news for me. If you have any info on this rate I would love to know, I have been looking it up online today. There is so much to read. He went in E3 because of his time in college. So I dont know how the advancements work. But when we dropped him off Sunday eve. he was able to take his cell phone with him, so I am awaiting that 1st phone call again.
I am so tempted to text him to see how his 1st day went, but I dont want to be too pushy. He thinks he is in for the long term, he was very excited to start A school.
