There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Ryan got an update from the housing office day before yesterday - they left a message and he thought "Sweet!!!! Maybe they have a place for us! (even though they said they wouldn't)".... He also would have preferred base housing just because it's much less hassle even though they take all of your BAH. Anyway he called them back and the message that was left for him was to just update him on his list status letting him know that no housing will be available until July.

The date of available housing of course changes day to day because people remove themselves from the list (like we will be once our lease is finalized in the civi apartment) and people get unexpected orders... But from what I can tell there is just such a backlog of GL staffers due to the fiscal year holds that there really isn't alot of housing avail right now for students. Good luck!

Hi ladies! I am very new to all of this. My husband is only half-way through boot camp. Still not sure if he will be and FC or ET, but should know in a few weeks. He said in a letter I might get to move to GL. He wasn't more detailed than that. Does this mean he gets accompanied orders? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
In general ET's and FC's can have their families move with them (as long as they complete a live ashore packet which is a checklist of things your sailor must get done before you can come up there) due to the long schooling time. If your sailor will be in A school for 22 (i believe it's 22) weeks or more then they can move their family up and yes the Navy will give dislocation allowance and travel expenses.

My husband just turned in his live ashore chits and all other chits that went along with it and he PIR'd 4/17. He was able to get most of it done while he was still in indoc but since there is no available base housing at the moment he had to do extra steps to get the offbase housing information... Since they can only leave base at certain times and with 2 other sailors with them - it gets to be a difficult task getting back and forth from the apt complex to get it taken care of so when your husband puts in the applications for the apartment or house you guys choose... make sure he gets a dummy lease at the same time to show his PLR so he can get that ball rolling before he even signs the real lease. My husband wasn't told it could be a dummy lease until he already had the lease in hand so he could have turned in the chits far earlier had they have put the word dummy in front of lease and given him the correct live ashore packet (he was given on base live ashore packet instead of off base). Delays suck so anything to prevent them is great in my opinion! GOOD LUCK!
Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it.
Did your hubby fill out all the paperwork for you to move up there while in, or after boot camp? My husband graduates in April and I figured I would have to move up there on my own (I'm prego with twins due beginning of July) so I could live with him sooner-cause I heard it takes a while for the paperwork to get done for them to move you. How can I find out when they would move us up there?
Ryan classed up to SCC today so now I have to wait til Friday *pouts* - just thought I'd whine to y'all lol. Now I'm a sad monkey!

Hi ladies! My husband has PIR on 6/5, but I won't be able to move to be with him until Oct/Nov. I understand the on base housing has quite the waiting list. Does anyone have any tips on apartments in the area? Im having a difficult time finding something reasonable.
Melissa - first off welcome. Second... The extensive base housing waiting list from what I've been told is due to the hold times for the staffers at great lakes. The holds should be over by then and the waiting list changes daily so don't get discouraged as far as that goes. Remember base housing = losing all of your BAH though. There are loads of apartments on my drive from where our apartment is to the base - our drive goes through Zion, North Chicago, and Waukegan. I used rent.com to narrow the apartment search based on price. Are you looking for studio?1br? 2br? Luxury or cost efficient? I went with the cheapest of the bunch because I won't be working for the next year (our first child is due in july) so we really wanted to have the extra BAH pocketed for hard times just in case. It's called Crane Meadows and it's in Zion about 15-20mins from base depending on traffic. My 2nd choice was Harbor Lakes in Waukegan. My search on rent.com was narrowed down pretty tight to a specific few apartments in my price range due to us having pets and only some apartments allowed pets - so I suggest using that website and narrowing the search specifically the way you want it.

G'luck!
You have been very helpful! I can't wait to move to be with him! I would like to live off base to save BAH, but we aren't sure what we are going to do yet. There are other variables. Congrats on your first baby! That is so exciting! We have no children, I am trying to get into nursing school, but that has been put on hold for a little while. Thank you again for all your help! Maybe when I move up there we can meet!
Glad to help and thank you as well :).
How long have you been living in Great Lakes? I looked at Crane Meadows. That is more of the price range I was thinking. How long did it take for him to fill out the live ashore packet before you were able to move? Are there other Navy folk that live at Crane Meadows? Im concerned of meeting people. I plan on getting a job, but unless you experience it no one understands. At my job now everyone is very supportive and I am grateful, but I have no one here who really understands what Im dealing with right now. Moving is hard because he and I both grew up in Cincinnati. All our friends and family are here. You have been very helpful! I really appreciate at it. Sorry to unload all my questions.
