My son has been in DEP since last April. I am excited about his future and also sad to see him go. But I think I am ready but I am sure there will be some tears when we drop him off on Monday. I'm told we get to stay at the hotel till 7 and I'm not leaving a minute before 7. We live in St.Louis Mo and plan on driving up for graduation since its only a 5 hour drive. Please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing.
Today's the day we drop him off at the hotel. We are going to his swearing in tomorrow morning at MEPS, but we live in Columbus, OH where everything is so it's easier for us to maintain that contact until he leaves. We'll be driving to graduation too since I think it's only 6 hours to Chicago from here. I'll let you know tomorrow after he's gone how it went. I'm struggling to keep it together this morning.
Does anyone know while our son or daughters are in boot camp can we send a box of girl scout cookies or is it just letter can receive?
I'm not sure but I know if we can my boy will be wanting to know where his are. My boy just left today for boot camp.
Hi we were at MEPS in Columbus today too. We plan on driving to graduation too. My son did text me about 5:20 said they were close. They stopped by cracker barrel and ate. Since we left I've been a mess. He's my oldest and I don't think I was ready for him to go yet.
My son left from Columbus too today and I'm holding it together better than I thought I would. I'm just glad that they got there before the bad snow set in. I know several kids are leaving the 5th and 6th. He's my youngest and the last one at home so it's pretty quiet now. I'm not sure if we're ever ready enough to let them go. I thought it was hard taking my older son to college but this was way worse. It's good to have someone who understands to talk too. Hang in there!
Hi. I know how you feel. My son left in August and it devastated me. He is the baby of the family and had never been away from home. I laid in bed for two days crying. I had to go back to work and it was the best thing for me. You'll be okay, it just takes time. I kept thinking he was sad, lonely, etc., however, quite the opposite. He was busy, busy, busy and was so tired at night he went right to sleep. He loves the food at Great Lakes and said the basic wasn't as bad as everyone told him it would be. He said if you listen to the officers and do what you're told, you'll be fine. I wrote him a letter everyday and then as soon as I got his address sent to me by him, I mailed all of those letters I wrote him. I can't tell you how much they love getting letters.........it keeps them from getting homesick...so write, write, write!!!
My brother left for the Navy about a week or so ago. We are really close and I miss him like crazy!! To be honest, I feel like part of me is missing. Although you feel totally alone, I promise you that you are not. There are some AMAZING people on here who are always willing to listen. If you want to talk feel free to message me.
I hope you are doing okay.
Alyssa
My son left for Meps in Albany, NY on 3/11 and arrived in Chicago on 3/12. I dont think I was prepared for how sad I was going to be. When I left him, I almost felt like I would never see him again. It was byfar the most painful moment of my life and to think- I was encouraging him to join! Boy, did I want to retract that statement!!
Now, it's been a few days and as each day passes I feel better and better. I can't help but think about how he is feeling...is he lonely, is he scared...what if he doesnt feel good, etc. Yet, I couldnt be more proud of his decision and sacrifice. It's strange how all of these emotions can be mixed together.
I'm so glad I have found this website/forum! It feels good to be connected to others who are going through the same thing. I am also thankful for the information and videos as it helps me to be more connected to my son!
To all the moms, dads, wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends: I know how difficult it is to let go of your significant other. It has been approximately eight weeks since I have seen my son. I can tell you this. This web page will be an excellent recourse and comfort. This Friday my son will graduate. I am so excited. I quote him "Boot Camp has its moments, times in which you think "What was I thinking" and other in which you know I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE. " Please be patient with your SR (sailor recruit) I guarantee you that these weeks will go by sooner than you think. My advise: Write every day (they will need that). Keep your phone next to you at all times (you never know when you will get a call from him or her). Talk to other significant others on these forums. Soon you will all be in my positions. To all of you I wish you well fair winds and sunny skies ahead.
Div 126 Mom.
It is actually "Seaman Recruit" rather than "Sailor Recruit", but otherwise your advice is sound. The site is a great resource for information and support.
Fair Winds and Following Seas to you and your Sailor.
