We dropped our son off at the recruiter's office a week ago today (Tuesday). We got the "I am here" call the next night, Wednesday, 9/2. While at the recruiter's office, he told us that our son's first two weeks would be in quarantine (which we already knew) and that he would be at Fort McCoy in a hotel-like room in total isolation for the 14 days before boot camp. While on his way to Chicago, our son heard that they may go to Great Wolf Lodge instead for quarantine. When we got his call, I looked on my phone to see where he was, and it showed him being at Great Lakes RTC. On Sunday, I did some on-line research, and I believe he is at Fort McCoy in what is called ROM. It looks like he may not be in isolation, but instead with a group. I hope this is true!
I supposed we might get some answers when we get the packet in the mail or when he calls us again in four weeks, but I'm impatient. It would also help to know so that we knew how to pray specifically for our son. Is there anyone that is in the same boat (or should I say, ship?) and wondering where their family member is?
My son Seth shipped out this past Tuesday 9/1/2020 from Montgomery AL. I got a call from Seth when he arrived at the Great Lakes. He said he would be at the GL for 4 days then he would be going to Ft McCoy to quarantine for 2 weeks then back to GL to finish out BC . Also said he would be calling me in 4 weeks which today would make it 3 weeks until. Seth went into the delayed entry program for OS rate. I have met some really nice moms on this site that have been very helpful.
Jen(OS Mom), good to hear from you. I'm not sure what "delayed entry program for OS" means. Lol! Our son just graduated from police academy. A few months ago, he enlisted in the Navy Reserves and after boot camp will be going to A school for Master-At-Arms.
Delayed Entry means the rate (job) Operations Specialist (OS) at the time he signed up was not available so in order to secure the rate he wanted he enlisted in the delayed entry program for OS Rate. I hope I explained it correctly. While he was waiting for his recruiter to give him a ship date Seth took the time to study his Navy handbook and do physical training every day. They had mandatory weekly zoom meetings for everyone that was in the Delayed Entry Program with him.
I know this is going to sound silly of me, but I realized our son also did delayed entry. I know he went to what he called DEP meetings. Now I know what that stands for. Lol. But he enlisted with the Navy Reserves back in April, I believe. But he couldn't go until he finished police academy, which got put on hold because of Covid. He finally graduated from police academy the end of July. He will be going to A school for MAA. In the back of my mind, I'm wondering if he might end up going active duty.
Hi Jen! My son left Virginia on Sept 1st going in for OS as well! My husband was an OS for his entire 22 year career. Jordan also entered the delayed entry program in February. I'm sure our sons will be together!
Yes! I'm so glad we connected! So glad to have other moms to go through this journey with!
C'sMom2020 - I left another comment on your my page - Have you read BelovedbyHim's blog post -
I don't know if she updated it with info on FT McCoy or not. - Looks like she did, I just didn't read all the way through it.
Chatting in the BC Mom group is a good place to make connections as well.
Thank you. That helps a lot. Wish I had known some of this before he left! But I believe he'll be fine! I will try to find the BC Mom group. Again, thanks!
I am sure he will be fine. I didn't know anything about this site when my son went to BC three years ago. I only had information from the recruiter and the BC main website at Recruit Training Command. It wasn't until PIR week was coming up that I started hunting for more information.
I shared another note on your page. You need to be sure to click on the BC Mom group from your my page and then scroll mostly down the page to see a comment wall that should come up and you can introduce yourself there.
I would like to send you a friend request if that's okay?
