My son will be taking the ASVAB on Tuesday.  His recruiter will pick him up from school on Monday and he will spend the night downtown in a hotel.  This is his 2nd time taking the ASVAB, the first time he scored a 45 and he needs to score at least a 50 to get in the Navy.  He has been studying very hard and I am so stressed for him.

Can anyone give me any advise for him as to what all they will have him do before and after the ASVAB test?

Thank you,

Laurie

Hi Laurie. I'm Stephanie:) My son leaves for BC next month. My sons recruiter advised him not to study 2 days before the ASVAB, it was his second time as well, he did very well. When they go to downtown Houston they take the test, do a physical, pick a job and most importantly they sign up for the Navy depending on the ASVAB score. When my son came home I was surprised that he had signed paperwork yet at the same time I was very proud he had taken that next step for his future. I don't know what your situation is but for us living in such a small town in Texas I told my son if you aren't going to college then pick a branch of the Military. I think the whole package he gets with the Navy out weighs hanging out in smallville with a girlfriend and a so-so job. That's my story, sorry I didn't mean to get carried away. I know your feeling anxious and stressed for him but the best advise I can give is to pray about it and let him know you support him. If you would like to talk don't hesitate to message me. i wish your son luck and many blessings to yall.

Laurie~

My son just walked in and wanted me relay a message to your son. During the processing system it will feel like a nascar race but do NOT let them push him enter a job he doesn't want. If he has to redo the whole process it may be worth it to get what he wants. He needs to remember this process is about HIM and he will be signing up for the next 4 years. If he isn't happy with what his job is that will reflect on him and the Navy. Just an important little tidbit to pass on. Don't let the uniformed men and women intimidate him. Everything will work out fine.

Hi Stephanie. Thank you for your response. Everything I hear is helpful as we feel like we are going into this blind. Cory isn't one to ask a lot of questions and just kind of goes with the flow. We found out that his recruiter will pick him up after school on Monday and take him to downtown Houston to take the ASVAB. He will spend the night in a hotel that night and take the physical first thing Tuesday morning. I'm not sure what will happen if he doesn't score a 50 though. We have already had to give them his original birth certificate and social security card, which i thought was weird since he hasnt even taken the test yet. Since he is still 17 I don't think he can sign yet. Is this true? He will be 18 on Wednesday. He hasn't been told not to study before, in fact they have told him to nothing but study. Cory isn't a good test taker, he's smart & knows the information but bombs on tests. I was the same way & probably even worse now that I'm older. =)
