My stepson is leaving for boot camp on Tuesday. I'm wondering what to expect. Is there a ceremony or is it just a drop off/send off type of event? I'm not sure how to dress myself, or for my 7 year old son.  Thank you very much.

His Recruiter will either pick him up or you will drop him off at a designated spot--often the Recruiting Office.  You are able to meet him at MEPS for the swearing in, the Recruiter will tell you an approximate time of when to be there, but you may be there a while.  You would dress casually and should be able to get a picture of the swearing in.  My son wanted to go on his own, so I didn't get to do this
Thank you so much. I really appreciate all of your help.

Caryl - If you want to send him off, find out when he will depart MEPS and will arrive at the airport for his departure to Great Lakes and request a concourse gate pass.  That way you can actually see him board the flight and you will have closure.  Here is the link to TSA authorizing it, along with the message that was put out.

Accommodations For U.S. Military Personnel

Military Family Member Gate Passes

Family members who want to accompany a military service member being deployed to the boarding gate or greet them returning from deployment at the arrival gate may receive passes to enter the secure area of the airport.

Interested military family members should contact their air carrier representative at the departure/arrival airport for proper local procedures.

Secondly, you may want your son to watch this "P" day pdf file I made.  It might help him...

Thank you so much for this information. It was an incredible experience to be a part of.  It was a battle to receive the security passes, but... this determined StepMama didn't give up and eventually we got them! :-) Thank you for the tip!
CarylC - You may want to take a book or handheld game for your 7 year old as this may be a bit of a waiting game. When we attended in May, we had to stay in a small room and spent quite a bit of time waiting.  During that time, we watched a lot of kids getting called up to the main desk and marched back and forth from several rooms for processing which was fine with us, but would make most 7 year olds go a bit stir crazy.  We didn't accompany our son to the airport--I think he didn't want to see mom cry any more than he'd already had to.  Very proud moment--but still a bit tough to let go.  Take your camera (and a tissue)!  If he wants company at the airport, definitely go!  Follow his lead.

Our recruiter has told us we can come down to the hotel and have dinner with our son the night before he ships. We plan to do this and also see him sworn-in at MEPS this Monday (!!). I know some parents do go to the airport, but my son says he wants to get to know the guys and gals he will be traveling with and we are going to respect that. Also, there are only so many good-byes in a 24 hr. period that I can handle! ;)

NOT GOODBYE. SAY THE FOLLOWING:

"Have a wonderful adventure. We are proud of you. We love you. We'll see you at PIR."

GOT THAT?

Take care. BQB.

Excellent advice!  Thanks BunkerQB!
