My son left for bootcamp on Wednesday and I've been crying off and on ever since.  I feel so lost not beling able to call him, FB him or contact hm in any way.  I never thought it would be this difficult.  I'm really struggling. I'm not worried about his safety, just feel so disconnected, like he's gone forever.  He is my firstborn too, maybe that's it?   I don't know, but he reached this milestone that I feel like I wasn't prepared for.  Anyone else feel like that?

You probably will, but just know that it's normal. Navy For Moms is a great resource for information as well as an outlet for sharing with others who have been, are in, or will be in the same position as you are.

patrice- my1st born is right I have read so many discussion and it can be different every time but at least you are given a head up on all of this  so you will be a pro by the time your daughter leaves..be sure to read http://www.navyformoms.com/forum/topics/survival-guide-for-navy-for... also the one what to take your pir before they go to BC

my son left for Great Lakes on March 20th...we got what seemed liked a scripted call once he arrived saying he would call again in three weeks and expect a letter soon...does anyone know how soon we can expect a letter and obtaining his address to write him?

Hi,

It seems be be slightly different with each DIV. but you should get the form letter with his graduation date and his address about a week after his "kid in a box".  I got my box about a week after he left, and then the letter the following week.  It also depends on where you live.  The closer you live to GL, the sooner the mail reaches you.  Good luck.  Mine just graduated on 3-16, so I just went through the whole process.  It's maddening at times, but it's all part of their training.  It's so worth it in the end!!  I did get his first call after 3 weeks and 1 day.  The exact day is different for everyone.  Just know that you need to have your phone glued to you for the next 8 + weeks, just in case they call!!  I wish you the best!

You can contact his recruiter...they usually have the address first :)

My son is graduating on April 13. My daughter and I are trying to work out flights so we can go together. It's craziness. Flights are sooooo expensive and gasoline prices are a killer.

Yes, it was not cheap for us to drive up there.  The gasoline prices, plus all the tolls!!  We spent about $100  in tolls there and back from Cleveland, Ohio.   I feel for the families who are unable to attend because of the high cost of traveling.

We have been told that they will provide us with a letter in the first letter he sends home so aprox 2-3 weeks..

Hi everyone...Just thought I would let you all know that Calls for Recruits .org has free phone cards for recruits in boot camp.  You can either go there and contact through the site, or send me a friend request here and I will send you some.

Free Phone card would be wonderful.... The little things that help a parent out...

I sooo understand how you are feeling... Even my husband dosen't get it...  It is the NO contact that "trips me up".. I have to say that this website has been soooo helpful.. Watch some of the videos and read some of the comments so it has cleared us some of my questions as to what he is doing today... Thank you to those of you that started this website.. I am on day 4 as my son left on Monday and I have to say it is getting better and I am trusting the the good Lord is watching over him and trust all will progress as planned and in a few weeks we will get to see and touch him at his well deserved graduation.

my son leaves tuesday and today i've just felt...well, i can't explain how i'm feeling...we've had some good talks like never before, just a sign that he's growing up and i'm just not ready for that i guess...i just keep tearing up and pray i don't lose it when he heads for the plane...i too am so thankful for this web site and to those who truly understand how we feel!

we had great talks too.  I did real good until we left the restaurant and took him to the hotel.  I lost it but got it back a little so I could hug him and tell him bye.  Now the ride home (an hour) cried most of the way and when I walked into the house.  well let's just say it was not good.  I cried again on the day he flew out but I will say it got better.  I get a little teary when I write him but not more crocodile tears.  I got his phone call that he got there.  Got the box and form letter really quick.  Now I am dying to get my first real letter.  It will be better, just remember they are doing something that they picked.  My son had been waiting a little over a year to finally get to go.  I know he is happy and I am proud.  hang in there.
