My daughter leaves in October 2015 for boot Camp. What should she take for her long hair to keep it in a bun? What will be allowed?

They will give recruits haircuts once they arrive at RTC. It is recommended that females get a haircut before going to RTC. The length should be above the collar so that her hair won't interfere with her uniform.

I thought they could keep their long hair as long as it was in a neat bun. This not true?

After boot camp the females can grow their hair out. But while in RTC it needs to be uniform length. They don't want people to stand out. They want everyone to look the same in boot camp.

Forgive me, I think i'm wrong. I think they can have their hair long in boot camp. I was just reading an article. They have the option to cut it once they get to RTC. You may want to ask her recruiter to check up on that.

RTC began a pilot program this spring to allow them to have long hair in boot camp, so they could be shown how to properly wear it.  I do not know if this is still in place, or if they have gone back to mandatory haircuts.

Honestly, having been through boot camp myself, I'd say cut it.  There is little time for personal care.  That said, read the regulations closely, see if she can get her hair squared away in scant minutes using only what is allowed.  Once her hair is up, see if a ball cap fits properly, and if her hair will stay in place all day, even while exercising.  Practice hairstyles now, and doing them without products such as hairspray and tons of bobby pins.  It is not as simple as "put it in a bun", it has to be a sturdy Navy regulation bun!

If her hair is unruly or requires a lot of time and attention, cut it a little shorter than regulation to allow for the nine weeks of growth.  Hair can be a real issue in boot camp, so making the decision to be proactive by learning to put it up or by choosing a good cut beforehand is prudent.

Have the recruiter stay on top of it, and stay tuned here and in the boot camp moms group, because things can change quickly before October.

(hey, you can see my A school hair in my picture! Long ago, but still fits today's regs, well, if I were standing, it is a little long when I was lounging)

Thank you for the information.

Mindyjrn, The photos from Friday's PIR include female recruits with buns and they would have shipped after the pilot program was to have ended. That said, the RTC may choose to go back to requiring that female hair be cut at any time since they seem to have expanded the pilot and have not officially adopted the program permanently (at least not that I have seen and I do miss things sometimes). You daughter should be aware that the possibility exists that her hair will be cut at the RTC if she does not cut it ahead of shipping.

I left info for you on your My Page.

Thanks for all the great groups. Loving this site, knowing I'm not alone in this!

You are very welcome.

Glad to be of help.

Mindyjrn,

I remember reading an article not too long ago that the Navy was allowing braided hair and was moving away from the bun, which my now veteran daughter used to use the cut off top of her black sock to make the bun.  It was too much to keep up with at boot and she did have her hair cut before she went in and again once she reported!!!  Interesting enough, when I went to bootcamp (years ago) I was allowed to keep my long hair and I used to put it up in a braid when it was wet and left it that way for several days!!!  Don't know that I'd want to mess with that again if I had it to do over!!!!!  I can check with my daughter who is still active and see what she knows about the recent hair regs.

Bear in mind that boot camp regs can be a bit stricter than what is allowed in the fleet.  RTC often does its own thing.

We were not allowed braids when I was in, so that is a good change, a great option.
