My son left for bootcamp today.  Can anyone tell me how much time we will ave to spend with him after graduation?  He will be going to A school in Texas but I don't know if they leave right away.  Even if they don't leave right away I am not sure if we will be allowed to visit.

Fallbrookmom, my son is in BC now. He has only been there 4 weeks, but it feels like 4 years. You will get a call later tonight that will last just a few seconds telling you he arrived safely. About a week later, you will get the box with his clothes. About 7-10 days after you receive the box, you will get the form letter with his mailing address and PIR. I have been told that graduation is usually over by 10:30 that morning and he will likely get several hours of Liberty afterwards. Not all sailors leave the next day for A school, so you could have another day or two. I doubt he will know his travel arrangements until right before PIR.

Most of those who fly out will fly out the next day. Only those flying to Pensacola sometimes have flight availability issues and some will get an extra day of Liberty and fly out on Sunday. I have not seen Sailors flying to any other location fly out an any day other than the day after PIR since the RTC changed to Friday (for those going across the street) and Saturday departures (for those flying out) in the spring of 2012 unless there is a holiday at the end of the week. The only time that changes is if a Sailor must remain in the THU for some reason before leaving for the "A" School location.

my son graduated BC in Jan 16  -he was released for liberty after PIR and we had to have him back on base by 730 I think that evening but he was concerned about being late so we aimed for 7pm just incase - plus it's a decent walk from the carpark we could drop him off at and the barracks

They bussed him to the airport in the wee hours of the morning on the Saturday - we met him at the airport (and he didn't know travel arrangements until right before PIR so we found out after PIR) and got passes to go through security and wait at the gate with him - we were able to give him his mobile phone, laptop, Kindle etc...at the airport - he couldn't take anything back to base with him the night before.

We left enough time in our schedule to allow us to stay if he had flown out on Sunday instead of Saturday as we had heard that was a slim possibility but that most fly out on Saturday.

Thank you for the feedback.  I anxiously wait for his call tonight.  I know he's fine, but I am still so nervous.  I somehow thought we would have a few days after BC before A school, but I guess we just won't know until the last minute.  I appreciate your support.

He will most likely fly out the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) to help you know how to plan your weekend.

Check your My Page.

Thank you for the information.  I was wondering when we could give him his personal belongings.

The answer is....it depends.

As someone mentioned and most importantly, once you find out when he flies out, you can get a pass and permission at the airport to go through security to spend some time with him at the airport before he flies out.

He definitely will not have days there as they really have nowhere to keep them unless they are doing A School at Great Lakes.

Your sailor will not have these answers yet, but will get more information (or may not) later.

First rule in being involved with the military is....."hurry up and wait".

there are times that those with A schools outside of Great Lakes are held back due to space issues and they can be at Great Lakes longer than a few days after PIR but they will find out right before graduation. My coworker's son graduated in August 2016 and is a CS and his A school was at Ft. Lee, VA but his entire CS class was held back at the A school side of Great Lakes for 2 full weeks because they didn't have room for them yet down in Ft. Lee so it does happen where they can end up waiting at GL.  The 2 weeks he was there he really didn't have much to do either so it was a lot of hurry up and wait at Great Lakes until Ft. Lee had room for the CS students to go down there.

tpadul, yes, those with a contract for CS always stay in GL at least a week for INDOC and then they may stay for 1 to 3 additional weeks before flying to VA. That does not happen for any other rating.

Fallbrookmom.  My daughter left for boot camp as well on April 5th, 2017. Looks like we will be watching them graduate around the same time. I am a mess even more after my 15 second phone call.  Prayers to you

Prayers to you too.  I cannot believe how much I already miss my son.  You must be so proud of your daughter.  When we dropped our son off there were at least 5 male recruits for every 1 female.  Your daughter is so brave!  I hope you were able to spend a lot of time with her before she left.

NavyMomofCyn, I left info for you on your My Page.
