So, my son has a date for BC of May 18, 2016. About a month ago they called and asked if he could  leave in under a week. He could not with short notice. Does this happen often ?  Will they call again and ask him to leave early ? Also they gave him an option. Do they ever say we have changed your BC date you HAVE to go now ? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks in advance for your reply. !

Yes, it could happen again and he has the option of accepting the early ship date or rejecting it. At this time of year, he could get a slightly sooner or later ship date (usually only a day or so before or after his current ship date) that he must take if there was an error in his contract or there is a reason for needing him to ship on a different date (too many or too few shipping on a certain date, for example), but no, they won't make him take any ship date that is before his current contracted date by more than that. He must have indicated that he was willing to take an earlier ship date to have been called.

Those who ship in December often get their ship dates moved due to the holiday stand down for recruiting activities, but there is no other time that that happens.

Some do not realize that the future Sailor will spend the night at the hotel the night before the ship date and feel that they have lost a day for that when all future Sailors spend time with the recruiter the day before the final MEPS before shipping to the RTC.

Thank you for answering that. And I think you answered another question I had. If he has date of May 18th, does that mean fly out to BC on the 18th or does that mean they need him at MEPS on 18th and fly out on 19th? Or would it be Meps and hotel on May 17th ?  Hope that was clear and not all jumbled : )

The ship date is the date that he swears in at MEPS and flies out to the RTC. He will be picked up by the recruiter or dropped off with the recruiter on the 17th and spend that night in the hotel and will be at MEPS on the 18th and leave from there.

That helps a lot on my timing for his family going away get together : ) Thanks. again.
