OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I need help understanding something and am hoping someone can help explain something to me. When my son went to MEPS in December there was only one job (RP) available for reserves. The convinced him that he should go ahead and take this job to avoid having to go back to MEPS for the entire process again. They told him all he had to do was put a change request in and as soon as something opened he could go into it. He was also told should nothing come up by his ship out date they would just reclassify him until something did come up. Of course it is now the middle of February and he still does not have a new job. Recruiter keeps telling him not to worry. Does anyone have any experience with this. He does not want to be an RP.

When he leaves for bootcamp he leaves with what ever the contract is he signed...if he doesn't want to be an RP, he puts in what is called a DAR with the recruiter.  That is a Dep Action Request.

If it comes time for his ship date to bootcamp and if he didn't sign a new contract, he will be a RP reservist, there is NO changing in bootcamp or at the school.  

So basically if we get to July which is ship out date right now they cannot do a reclassification and change his contract if no job has been found? This is what I find so frustrating they don't let these young adults ( he had just turned 18) consult with someone prior to signing the contract. The recruiter has supposedly submitted the DAR and says he must submit a new one monthly how could there still be zero jobs available 2 months later? How can we help elevate this to help ensure he is given another job?

There is nothing your son can do, unless he wants to be discharged from DEP and than try again.

Yes the DAR has to be put in every month.  It is up to your son to contact the recruiter all the time to see, if there is a new job he can switch up for.  Sense he leaves in July, they are trying to find a job that is also leaving in July...only way one will open up is if someone drops out of DEP.  MEPS is filling jobs that leave for bootcamp almost a year out, anything before that is already all filled up.

Regarding being able to consult with someone, he could have all he had to do was ask the classifier.

Why doesn' the want to be an RP?

Well technically, they all consult with someone prior to signing their contracts, young and old.  Just happens to be the consulting party IS the recruiter so not really a big help if the recruiter is the problem to begin with, huh??  Perhaps recommend your son speak with a different recruiter (I mean different altogether, maybe in a nearby city?) to see if he comes up with the same results to maybe compare and see?  Good luck, will be praying for your boy to get a new job!

He wants to do more than sit in a room on his 2 days a month and 2 weeks a year. Unlikely that he will do much more than that as a reservist who lives in Delaware with this rating. He did talk to the classifier, recruiter and the recruiters Chief at MEPS who all told him and then told my husband and I the next day that it would be no problem to find him a new job before July.

Sorry to say as a reservist, most just sit in a room for their one weekend a month and two weeks out of the summer. 

Not trying to be rude, here but what does he think he will be doing as a reservist in Delaware?  Most reservist just do training (ie on line) on there drill weekends.

Someone saying one thing and it being in writing are two different things.  Unless the recruiters gave you that in writing than there is no leg to stand on, and all he can do is keep after them for a DAR, but as I said that is a very slim chance as he is leaving in a few months for bootcamp and they are filling spots for bootcamp almost a year out.

He better decide NOW what he will do if it comes to his ship date and he still has the contract for RP.  As I said before he can't change his rating while in bootcamp or school, and if he gets through school and is an RP, he won't be changing it for a few years to anything else.  Will he go in anyways as a reservist RP, or will he back out of his contract?  Keep in mind if he backs out of his contract, odds of the recruiter still working with him to get him something else is slim to none.  As they did it once and he backed out.   You could say, well he told them he wanted something else?  That won't hold water as he signed the contract, no one forced him to. 

I know people of almost of every rating who are reservest and they all just sit around on their drill weekends, if he wants to do more than he should go Active duty.

My husband who was in the reserves in Delaware was a anti submarine warfare technician. He did have to drive to Pa for his weekends but he did do his job working on P3 airplanes at the VP 64 squadron. So yes I would think there is some job he could do and not just eat up taxpayer dollars.
Unfortunately there was nothing in writing but the day after MEPS the recruiter sat in my home and assured us it would be no problem tomswitch jobs, his chief called me and told me the same thing. So I'm sorry but I feel the kid was mislead just to get him to sign a contract and reach his quota.
The recruiter emails me weekly assuring me again he will get a new job before he leaves or he can be "reclassified" and his ship out date changed until we get a job he wants. Sounds like he is just lying to us.

sounds like he is just telling you what you want to hear.  As I have said before, he (your son) needs to think what he will do if it comes time to ship to bootcamp and he still has an RP contract.  When did your son sign his contract what month?  Also was he in school when he signed?

Reason I ask is he can only be in DEP for so long, if he goes past the 365 days he will be DEP discharged and he has to start the whole process all over again. 

Does the email say "he will get a new job" or does he say  "he will try to get him a new job"?

I just checked the last email from his recruiter which was last week. I asked what the staus of a job change was and he said "he would make sure this happens in a timely manner"
