Hello to all,

This question may have already been answered as I am behind on reading all posts, but my queston is: I am not certain if my son has changed one of the four people he initially listed as attending PIR (his brother who now can't attend) to an aunt who is planning to attend.  I wrote my son a letter about a week ago telling him of this last minute change, but the mail moves slowly and i'm wondering whether he'll get the letter before he graduates or be able to make the change if he finds out about the change too close to PIR.  I've been expecting a telephone call, but haven't heard from him in 2 weeks or so, before we knew of the change in family attending the ceremony.  I did call the public affairs office this morning and they said they didn't have access to the list until Aug 31!  Also they said the recruit has to change this.  If the change isn't made, the aunt would have to attend "standby" and probably couldn't sit with us as she would have to wait until everyone else is seated. Anyone have any advice about this?  I'm a little stressed!

Carol a similar thing happened to us. My son did get our request to change a guest, but they were cut off from changing the guests because the RDCs ran out of time... when my son called after Battle Stations he explained what had happened. So when we showed up at PIR to the check-in desk I explained the situation to the Navy guy checking us in and he just asked if that was the only guest we were changing and let us in with the new guest with no problem. I cannot guarantee you will be so lucky, but I found them to be extremely compassionate, understanding and accommodating with this mix-up.

Worst case scenario the aunt will have to just wait a little while in the check-in building and be admitted closer to the start of the ceremony. We had 11 divisions graduation and they let everyone that was waiting in and there were still plenty of seats left. If that happens, just save the aunt a seat with you on the bleachers by placing your camera bag or sweater there... no big deal. Good luck!
Have you attended PIR yet Carol? I have a similar issue - 3 family members cannot attend but a family friend (my son's best friend) can but we didn't find out til just 2 days ago. My son called and said he'd ask if he could change it but didn't know if he'd have access this close to graduation. Since three can't go and one can, maybe that will help - we'll be taking up less space!!
Don't know when you all will have PIR, but we just attended yesterday. WOW!
There were 11 of us, the 4 immediate family and 7 others, including my husband and I,, who are our sailors grandparents. It was huge, 10 divisions graduating. Yes, the family is seated first, but there is sooooooooo much seating. If some can't sit with the family, or whoever the 4 tickets are for, seating may be just a couple of seats away. And 4 will be seated, the 4 tickets together, whoever's name is on the chart for check-in.
We attended on the 8th - my son's friend was on the list - my son must have gotten it changed in time - we got there early to get a good seat and we had the shuttle from the hotel take us (best decision EVER) and since my son was grad and go to the Great Lakes A school, he had to check in with them and that took over 4 hours, however, we got to sign him out as a Libery Buddy and have him overnight - he'd been really sick and ended up taking cough syrup and sleeping for nearly 12 hours, but that's ok, we had him til we had to get back to the airport the next day and now he can call whenever he wants, text (I took his cell phone) and there is a public computor on base so I just got done chatting with him on Facebook!!!
we have a pir of 11/05............... very nervous about the whole thing! getting the whole clan in, our other sons girlfriend, in laws, friends of sr.... getting there early enough. staying @ the marriot, and dont know whether to take shuttle , or drive ourselves, we live in mich, and will have our own transportation. can u help me please! thank you!
We stayed at the Days Inn in Libertyville - got the rooms online for $48 per night, very clean, basic rooms, free shuttles to the PIR - it was TOTALLY worth it to not drive!!! Just seeing all the traffic made me glad we didn't drive!! We had a rental car but that was for driving to eat, Giordanos in Gurnee (very good) Gino's in Libertyville - also good, the Wildberry for breakfast 2 days in a row (don't miss this place - excellent food and service!!) Thanks to the advice on here, I knew to sit facing the correct division, as you sit down you see markers with the division numbers, your division will be to your right of the marker - we took the 6:30 shuttle and got excellent seats - make sure your camera has a good zoom (I wish mine had been better.) A long wait but the people watching was worth it - saw some interesting outfits and folks!! They have coffee, soda, water and candy bars for sale there too, as well as the white navy hats for souvenirs. I saw families of 8 or more so I wouldn't worrry and we had 12 divisions, so the place seemed pretty packed at least on the main floor.
We also had PIR last weekend. There were 11 of us. The 4 tickets got the seats they wanted---best seats are the high ones, then there was plenty of seating for all the others, either down below or in the balcony. There are so many sailors that have no family there. We also adopted a sailor for the day, whose family couldn't come, and so glad we did. We took her out to eat with us, and just kind of hung out with us. We drove into the base, leaving the Ramada at 6:30 and were tied up in bumper to bumper for 1 1/2 hours. So the shuttle would have been well worth it!
We stayed at the Ramada, partly because of the continental breakfast, so we could get something to eat before we left. The breakfast is fine, but you need to be there at 5:30, when they open, or you will be in a huge line. We got the military rate, which you have to ask for, but 2 doubles were $78.
