My son starts BT on 11/10 so will be gone over Christmas.  Is it true that he will get to come home for 12 hours on Christmas day?  How does that work?  Thanks in advance!

RTC has the Adopt a Sailor program for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The two most senior Training Groups (those slotted to graduate a week to two weeks after the holiday) have the opportunity to be adopted out by immediate family for the day. Those recruits who are not adopted by family are adopted out in groups by local civic organizations and churches, where they are served a holiday meal and can relax and contact home (most offer the use of computers and cell phones).

These two training groups will send home separate informational forms that need to be filled out by the family member adopting and returned back to RTC by a deadline date. This must be done and approved in order to take your recruit for the day. The are no surprise last minute adoptions, you won't be able to take your recruit that way.

Recruits must stay within a 50 mile radius of RTC (no exceptions).

Those are the basics of how it works. Details would come from your recruit if and when you are able to adopt your recruit. I do think it is about 10-12 hours. You'd have to subtract drive time and recruits should be back early. On time is late in the military.

hufski6 - This is just speculation, but counting forward from you're sons arrival date puts him in the possible range. There are NO guarantees though as we do not know when his actual PIR date will be AND we do not have any Adopt a Sailor info as yet either. IF RTC posts a public announcement on their FB page it will most likely be done when the actual two TG's are already at BC. No way to know before then. Typically the first two TG's graduating in January are eligible for Christmas Adopt a Sailor but the that's a guide not a hard and fast rule. Only the Navy knows how they determine these things :-)

One thing about the military is to... be prepared but be flexible...and don't hold your breath (you could die that way!). AND be super excited when something good comes to fruition! Okay, that's three things! LOL

I hope it works out for you!

Good information to know.  Thanks for taking the time to send it.  All the best!

My son leaves on Nov. 16th for RTC. Not sure he will make the time cut for possible adoption at Christmas.  So, can a small care package be sent to my SR at BC?  Or is it best to just send him a letter?  Thanks.

No care packages. Not even for the holidays.
