Better to wait until they finish Boot Camp and move to see what they need. They can't take anything with them to Boot Camp anyway. Perhaps you can yell at them a bunch to prepare them? :)
LOL! Thanks Concernedad for the chuckle today! You have hit my dilema on the head - she can't take anything with her, and we are not sure what she can take to A School. She will be going to Monterey for A school, but we are not sure how long she will be there (anywhere from 6 months to 18 months we have been told) or what she might need there... She is going through all of her things now and getting rid of all the non-essentials... Just want to give her something extra special this year...
Go see her graduate. You'll be shocked at how much she appreciates you being there.
Yeah, for the last year or so, we keep telling our sailor to tell us what he needs and he keeps saying "nuttin', but I might need something later". So we wait with open credit card.
what kind of budget?
Between $200 and $300.00. She has lived on her own in college, she loves clothes, but knows that she won't need them... And there is absolutely no doubt that we would be there for her graduation!
I would try to think beyond boot camp then. Does she have a kindle or an ipod/ipad? If she is going to be far enough away from you in A school that visiting will be hard you will want some way to be able to video chat with her. My daughter lives in Alaska and I live in AZ so we skype almost every week. It is so much better than just talking/texting on the phone because I can see her.
That is a GREAT idea! Thanks, amandamomof4... I wasn't sure how much electronics they will be allowed in A school, and I do believe she will be there for awhile.
My son left just after his birthday. We looked at the list of what he was allowed to bring and that's what he got as his gifts. A small Bible, imprinted and with inspirational messages from us written on the fly leaves...a religious medallion smaller than a dog tag...a phone card...and travel-kit sized toiletries. He also got a watch because we knew he could have that after boot camp..
Have you considered an "experience" as a gift idea? A facial, a massage, a trip to someplace she really wants to go like a nice restaurant?
I do like the idea of preparational yelling. ;-)
If you give the gift of yelling, be sure they are doing push-ups and reciting their General Orders to be most effective.
A watch is a good idea, although with electronics, I'd go for a tablet/ipad and not a phone. You don't know where she'll go after school and most US phones aren't always compatible with overseas systems.
I like the massage, manicure suggestion, throw in a really good short hair cut too. Better do that before boot camp rather than let them do it.
A slim trifold black wallet filled with stamps, phone cards, wallet photos, addresses and phone numbers, inspirational messages, and $20 in cash.
I love the idea of the manicure and hair cut experience, Anti M! My SR has had long hair since middle school, so this is going to be traumatic, but she has been "clipping" out pictures of possible hair cuts she likes, so a nice cut would be a great gift. Her younger brother has already weighed in on getting her the wallet for his gift!
Thanks for all the great ideas! Makes this holiday time a little more exciting - we have been experiencing the "this is the last time" blues for a couple of weeks now. Time is going by sooo quickly!
Thanks CamsShel for the great ideas! I especially love the idea of a gift certificate to a nice restaurant, she and her boyfriend spending as much time together as they can before she leaves, and this would make a nice gift! :D
