Hi all~

For those of you who are experienced Navy moms with sailors out to sea, I need some advise.  For the last 2 1/2 years my son has been in the Nuclear school program and been state side this entire time.  He has finally received his orders Jan 3rd and I'm wondering about Christmas gift ideas to give him while he's out to sea in the sub.  Just not sure how much space they have to store things or what would be a practical to give.  Any ideas you might have would be great.  Thanks so much!

My nephew is a nuke on a sub.  They have very little room, in fact, he was "hot racking" for quite a while.  That means three guys, one bed, working and sleeping in shifts.

He loves his Kindle (although I think he has a Nook).  No room for much of anything else.  I've sent packages, and he has liked thick warm socks, and individually wrapped tea, and gum and lip balm.   A pack of cards was good.

Gift cards for books if he has a Kindle, and music downloads and so on.  He can't use them at sea, but he can load up his electronic devices before he deploys.

I send magazines, but never send a subscription to an FPO, they don't get there half the time.  Find out what magazine he likes, and have it sent to you so you can put them in packages. Some subs can get mail, other types cannot, so ask your sailor if he's on a fast attack or a boomer.  They'll let him know the policies.

My biggest gift to my nephew is a recurring monthly donation to the USO in his name.  He uses the USO when at overseas ports which have them (surprisingly many do) and loves that I support them.

Hi there Anti M...so sorry to reply so very late but wanted to thank you so much for all the great gift ideas.  It helps to have advise from someone who has already sent stuff to their sailor.  Your nephew is very lucky to have such a caring aunt :)  I love the magazine idea & the USO donation thing...very cool.  I know my son will be on a fast attack sub but not sure what that means yet in terms of receiving mail or not.  He doesn't yet know either but I'm sure he'll find out soon enough.  Thanks again and I hope you and yours have an awesome Christmas.

If I have it right, fast attacks can get packages.

oh wonderful....that's good to know.   Thanks!
