For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

My son is deployed and out at sea. His grandfather is gravely ill.He is extremely close to him. What is the protooc0l? Who do I contact? does the chaplain onboard deliver the news? He sometimes calls or e-mails-do I tell him first?. Please help. Thank you Cathyg

I'm so sorry to hear that...What Ship is he on? There is probably a group on here for it and often the Ombudsman is a member of the group. Or call the Red Cross...they can help

Having done this before I can say that the Navy does NOT give leave in case of a grandparents death. They don’t consider that "Immediate Family" The Red Cross can also help in contacting the ship to get word to you son. As far as the fastest way. That’s a tough call.

Sorry to hear about your family cathyg... one thing my son wrote to me was that if there was an emergency and he couldn't be humevaced (his word) from the sub, then he didn't want to be notified. He put that in his pre-deployment sheet. The reason they want you to go thru the Red Cross is because they want someone to be able to deliver the news to your Sailor in person, so that he will have someone to talk to and support him, as opposed to reading about it in an email and it upsetting them, and possibly interfering with their duties.
Mind you I only have random email communication since he's on a sub; if you are able to speak to your son then your personal circumstances might be different.
