OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Deployment
OK, seasoned Navy moms or anyone else that can answer this question. My son's ship is scheduled to deploy in July. He is based in Norfolk, only 1 1/2 hour from where I live. Are family members allowed to watch a ship deploy? What is the procedure? Do family members get access to the base to stand on docks and wave goodbye to their Sailor? My son isn't a wealth of information and I have asked him if family is allowed to see him off and he doesn't know the answer.

You actually cant get on base without a sponsor, such as your sailor. there are areas in Norfolk to watch the ships go by. You may want to contact the ships ombudmen, and they will be able to give you info that you need for the specific ship to see what the rules are for that day.

Thanks Kathy. How to I find out who the ships ombudmen is? Like I said, my son, despite telling him to get this information, is clueless.

thats normal...every ship has a webpage, you can look on their webpage for info on the ombudsmen for the ship. It should list a few names, phone #s and emails to contact. Just tell them who your sailor is and ask for the info. Be patient, sometimes it takes a few days for a answers, sometimes its quick. Be prepared, when they go out for deployment, and you ask him questions, you will get about 1/2 if not less answered...you will come up with sneaky ways to get them out of him. sometimes is the simplest question, like what type of snacks do you want, and its like you asked them a tough question or something that is top secret! Hope this helped, be sure to join your ships group, the moms usually have lots of info to share.

In getting ready for deployment the sailors and piers are extremely busy your guy will probably not be able to spend time with you. I have found homecoming is much better

As an old-school (28+ years) Navy wife and Mom, I learned to skip watching the ship leave, for two reasons. First, our Sailors are so busy and focused on the deployment that they really don't have time to spend with us. Second (and more important) I learned the hard way that the worst thing I can do is watch the ship leave. I did it once when my husband was headed to the Persian Gulf from San Diego and swore I would never subject myself to that again.
Most likely, your son will not have much time to see you before the ship deploys. He may have to be on board the night before and unable to leave to get you access to the base in the morning. If you just want to watch the ship leave without accessing the base, the best location is at the rest area on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. You will have to pay the toll (it is $17 for a round-trip within a 24 hour period). You can stand on the fishing pier and the ship will pass right by. It is a very impressive sight and tourists always snap pictures and ask questions.
If you can't find the contact information for the command ombudsman, call the Fleet and Family Support Center at 757-444-2102; they can give you information for both the ombudsman and the command Family Readiness Group. Both of those can add you to their email distribution lists so you can stay informed about the ship's schedule and any family events.
