My son is due to graduate on 03/09. I am the only one that will be attending and family has pooled money to purchase my airline ticket which I have done. I have not gotten a room yet because after reading some of the discussions here and elsewhere I realize that something as basic as not shining his shoes well enough could keep him from participating. I cannot have people spending money that could be lost due to something like this happen. I am distraught, worried and have no idea what to do. We did not purchase one of the refundable tickets because no one could come up with 1000.00.
Now if he is graduating as I of course am hoping I am struggling to figure out how to get from OHare to GL as I am unable to rent a car and I am completely confused by the subway, bus and train systems! I am on an extremely tight budget and did find a hotel that served a free breakfast and light dinner snack about 4 miles from the graduation site, but am not sure if there is a shuttle to and from. Does anyone know of a website that lists which hotels within a radius that offers free shuttle? I am a total mess right now and completely panicking so any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Congrats on your soon to be Sailor! Breath...relax....99% of the recruits do make it through....the reason someone would be set back can be medical reasons, can't pass the run, and can't swim. So get ready and book a hotel....the Navy Lodge is close to the base....as far as the shuttle, you need to call the hotel to see if they have a shuttle.
As far as getting to the base, have you checked your PIR group on here and seen if anyone is flying in at the same time you are and can take you with?
Thank you. Between a barely working computer and having trouble figuring out how to navigate the site, I am sorry it has taken so long for me to respond. I really appreciate all of the encouragement and advice.
Call Sarge. He is a cab service there. I hear he offers great rates for the families.

He also puts on a meet & greet thursday night

And yes relax..it will all work out
Thank you so much I will call.
Why don't you post a comment on your PIR group and see another single mom would like to share a room. The PIR reference information group will get you going and this following discussion too.
I will think about doing that. Thank you.
I would think it's too late to get a room at Navy Lodge. Although, they are the cheapest and offer a free brown bag breakfast.
You need to get over your fear of taking the train. It will be, by far, the cheapest way to travel.
I can't agree enough with Bunker about trying to find someone on this site to share a ride or hotel with.
Your son will totally appreciate your being there. It will be worth the effort.
Odds of his graduating with his division is very much in your favor, and he will call you once he knows he has made it.
Thank you. It is not that I am afraid to ride the train, it is trying to figure out how to get to the train station from Ohare etc. From what I have figured out going that route will have me on several different modes of public transportation and will take a minimum of 2 hrs to get anywhere near GL and being unfamiliar with everything and alone and little to no spending money the potential for me to get lost and/or into any number of troublesome situations is a little more than I want to risk. Thank you for the encouragement. I have never gone through this and I have never been in the position I am in right now so having a tough go of it right now. If I can get to the graduation that is all I am concerned with at this point. I would stay in a tent or a hostel if I have to so that I can be there for my son-hoping it wont come to that of course, but i will do anything to be there. I got my flight taken care of so I am half way there!
There will be many families going to PIR. If you post a message in your PIR group with your need for sharing a ride, I am sure you are going to get a few responses. Indicate which hotel your are staying at - unless someone wanted to share and when your flights are. Almost all military people I have encounter will go out of their way to help another Navy Family. For example, I have had families pick up sailor and take them back to the hotel and offers to house sailors all across the US. Your PIR group is your best bet - better than here. Concerned dad and I are not going to be at PIR.
I did call Sarge. Great guy. Gave some great advice and offering assistance even as he is waiting to get in a dental chair! Above and beyond. Still trying to figure out how to navigate and trying to get to the PIR group I need to. Hoping all goes well. Thank you again to all that have posted advice to me. Please bare with me as I learn to navigate this site!
You already joined that PIR group. Click GROUPS on the above menu bar, then click "My Groups" (in small print, on the left). It will take you to a page with all the groups you belong to - at the moment it look like you only belong to one group - the PIR group. Go post the message NOW.
Additionally, remember you can always access your groups, discussion by going to your own personal page. Click MY PAGE tab on the above menu bar. After you go to your own personal page, please scroll down and see the comment I left on your page. It contains a link to the Survival Guide. Open this link (by clicking on it) - this discussion is full of information for parents whose kids are going through boot camp. You'll see videos, diagram of his barracks, links to the official Recruit Training Command, links to PIR groups and more.
I think I managed to post a request for advice and help on the PIR group site. Cant find it now so not sure if I did it right after all! I am usually pretty good with websites but am confused with this one at the moment. Not sure if it is because Im so stressed or if my blood sugar or pressure is messing with me! I will figure it out eventually I think. Thanks to everyone who is offering advice. I really appreciate it.
