http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/directions.asp gives directions.  Are you planning to park across the street at the Metra and walk across?  You will still want to arrive early since traffic is pretty bad the closer it gets to PIR time.  There also may not be enough parking spaces in that lot if you wait too long.

I had heard this parking was an option.  trust me we will be there early.  we don't want any hang ups with two 80 year old grandparents along.  we are hoping for a hotel shuttle to the gate.  we planned to go to Cubs game right after (husbands doing).  Of course that might get kyboshed depending on his assingment to 'A" school.  really hopeful for another day with him.  He has been doing extra watch working for extra Liberty. thank you for your link to directions.  Leaving from Seattle on Wednesday the 12th.  We will have a day to checkthings out in the area and a plan in place for early arrival.

I see you have joined the PIR group; you may also wish to join, or at least check out, Boot Camp Mom's, PIR Reference Information, and New Members Stop Here.  There will be a lot of good info for you.

What will your SR's rating (job) be?  If you know, I can tell you where "A" School will be.  There are groups for most of the A Schools and/or ratings.

Using the shuttle is a good idea if your hotel has one.  Be sure to sign up for an early shuttle so you have a better choice of seats in the Drill Hall.

You could also call Sarge and arrange something.  Sarge's cell number is 847-212-0246.  His fB page is https://www.facebook.com/taxisarge and he can be found on here as OldSarge.

The parking garage is adjacent to the Visitors Center, so if you get there early (between 6 and 6:30), then you will have no problems getting in as long as you have the vehicle pass (available now at http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/upcoming_grads.asp), ID for everyone in the car (you need that again in the Visitors Center when you check in), and registration and proof of insurance or rental agreement.

It sounds like your SR is trying to ensure that he will not have to go back during the Liberty hours to stand watch, which is a smart thing to do.  My Sailor did a watch during the night before PIR so that he could have uninterrupted Liberty.  Sometimes Sailors who do not have family coming in take the watches on the day of PIR, but not always since they also want to get away from the RTC.

Be sure to go to Sarge's Meet and Greet the night before PIR.  He willo have a lot of information for you.  Here are the links to the 3 Meet and Greets:  PIR 9/14/2012 Flanagan's Meet & Greet, SARGE'S MEET AND GREET, and PIR 09/14/2012 Ramada Meet and Greet.

My son is SECF I beleive. I also think he is headed to Groton, CT or somewhere in Georgia.  He will be on a sub.  We are on the west coast Washington so I suppose will finally get to see some of the East Coast.

Apparently Sarge runs a shuttle i am gathering if the Hotel does not?  I think there is a shuttle, I wll recheck. we are at the Residence Inn at Waukegan.

We were planning on the Meet and greet at Sarge's.  Anyone who has been doing that for free for the families of the PIR recruits deserves a visit and Kudos.  My father in law will be joining us.  he is ex-Navy so he will really love Sarge's efforts.

Sarge is retired Army and has been a real blessing for the new Sailors and their families.  Yes, he has a taxi service in the area.

Since your son will be on a sub, he will go to Groton for some of his training.  I think they all go there for the basics.  You may want to join SECF - ET & FT & STS, GROTON, CT. SUBSCHOOL & "A" SCHOOL MOMS, and Sub Moms.

If you are transporting two grandparents in their 80's and are not able to use the shuttle, I would suggest parking in the parking garage at RTC. There is a lot of walking involved, and not parking at RTC will only add to that. If anyone in your party has and uses a handicapped placard, be sure to take it with you! Hang it from your mirror BEFORE you get to the security line and they will direct you right to the handicapped parking area.

This made a HUGE difference in the distance I needed to walk. The grandparent's will thank you forever!!
