I just heard from my son that he was denied leave to come home for Christmas.  He hasn't had a leave since he signed up last April (2010).  We paid for the flight, trying to get a better price and being told since he enlisted that he would be able to come home for Christmas.

He was denied because he put in for his flight to leave on an early morning flight and he was told that it has to be after a full day, so I guess that means an end of the day flight.  He is going to try to put in for a different flight time and see what happens.  He is sad and we are too but we'll keep our chin up.

oh that's is horrible. Where is he at? I'm so sorry maybe the airline will switch it for him but I kind of doubt it. They are so strict with those things and they change unbelievable fees. Good luck!
Jody,
I don't know your son's background or where he is stationed, but this just doesn't seem correct. The Navy is all about maximum holiday routinue. It is really rare to not be allowed leave. There are exceptions though. If mission readiness is required, then he can't go on leave. If he fail to keep his Individual Medical Readiness (IMR) up to date, then he can't go on leave. If he is in a training command, and they said your leave can start no earlier that a certain time, then he can't go on leave earlier than that date (however he can resubmit for the correct periods)
.
To me, there would be only 2 of those items that prevent him going on leave 1. His training command said the earliest is xx:xx time, or, 2. He failed to get some crazy shot (example: Flu shot), and his IMR is flagged. Remember, all Leave chits are electronic now and they are compared to the IMR records.

If you give me some background, I can help you understand this. I'm an expert on Leave and Liberty.
a. Is he at a training command or in the fleet?
b. Is he mission critical?
c. What are his normal duty (work) hours? What about Sat and Sun?
d. What was the leave period authorized for his command. (ie did they say you can take leave from Dec 17 @ 16:30 to 2 Jan @ 19:00?
e. I understand his LPO or Chief denying his leave if he didn't follow the proper guidelines. However, I cannot see why they wouldn't allow him to take leave if he follows the rules. So has he resubmitted for the correct leave period?

Lastly,
This might be overkill for you. But I was the process of writing a Liberty and Leave info sheet to the members of both my Corry group and my Chicken Ship group on N4M's, but I haven't finished it yet. Those two groups didn't understand the Navy policy on leave, so I was trying to make it easy for them. I have it almost completed. If you want a copy of what I have already written (but not wordsmithed), just send me a pm and I'll send it to you....
If he is at a training command, they have to check out hundreds of sailors. Usually they will not approve a flight which leaves before noon. They are told this when they submit their leave chits. Sorry, but you jumped the gun by purchasing a ticket before he has his leave approved. I hope he gets to rectify the situation... but this will be true throughout his career. Don't buy the ticket until you know the leave TIMES as well as dates.
