We will be moving from KY to CT, all our things are already packed...I know movers would unpack and repack.  I'm wondering if we could make some money with a DITY move, and get our things faster?

Tasha - You must have some Navy family in your background. The reason I say this is "DITY" (Do it Yourself) is a really old term, that is still used by veterans. Within the last 12 years, the Navy now calls it "PERSONALLY PROCURED MOVEMENT (PPM)". Frankly being a Vet, I will never call it that. To me it's will always be DITY, but you need to know the PPO term to find the new stuff on it.
I have done DITY moves, and they really don't pay off. It always seems like you lose money. If you break anything, then it's your own fault. You buy the boxes. You buy the Tape. You get the honor of arguing with your spouse for not packing the stuff correctly. You do the sweating loading the stuff. You suffer the back pains. You do the paper work trying to be reimbursed for your cost.

To me, I'd rather just sit back and drink a beer while the professional pack my stuff. All I do is list the items they break, and file a claim. I can see if you want some of your stuff eariler, then do a partial shipment using DITY. I think the majoirity of the sailors I know do not like using it.

Here is some great link, just in case you don't have any.

Craig,

Lol thanks for the correction..no Navy in my family just a lot of military.. We decided to have the Navy move us and yes., no arguments with the hubby:) We can handle that on our own without the stress of a move:) Plus, with a baby and a very long drive ahead we thought it would be easiest on us to do it this way!

Take Care
Tasha
My son and his wife let the Navy take care of it and it was a piece of cake. Everything was tagged and logged, picked up from 2 different addresses and delivered all in one piece. Let the Navy do it.

We did a DITY move here to AZ we made a few grand off it. For us the work was worth it because were going on a "free" 10day vaca on our move money. We bought a TV box the rest of the boxes we got from stores(target) and off craigs list from other people who moved.
freecycle.org for your area might also be a good resource for boxes.

I think it depends on how much stuff you own, time, and if you have kids underfoot.
We had the normal bedroom set, 1 couch, 1 love seat, 3 living room tables, kitchen table chairs, entertainment center, TVs Desk, computer chair, House fixings, clothing, Bedding, games, DVDs, Scrapbooking stuff, Dive stuff and tanks, 3 luggage sets, book shelf, Card table and chairs, 10 pillows, blankets and our wine collection (89 bottles). So we moved basically a whole house. But we didn't have our dog yet. We also had a SUV with a tow package and my sedan packed full of stuff.
We have done two moves with the Navy taking care of it, neither I was really happy about, so our third move we did it ourselves. It actually wasn't too bad. Sure it seemed like a hassle at first, but we ended up making a ton of money off of it, couple grand at least, mainly because I under estimated how much we actually had so we only spent 40% of my initial guesstimate on the move leaving us with much more than anticipated.

Besides the money, the biggest plus for us was having our stuff when we wanted our stuff. On previous moves we had to borrow those house-hold items packages while we waited for our things to come in. Not a terrible thing, but being able to sleep on a bed made the back-ache worth it. I'd probably be up for another PPM depending on the length of travel to our next PCS.
I have done one DITY and made about $2,000. I will always do DITY moves from now on. It's important to stay organized and keep track of the paperwork but I didn't have anything go wrong.
