OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.

Do navy recruits find out their intial assignment in bootcamp?
My nephew graduates in two weeks at GL, and he said he has been told his "first command" is deploying shortly after A-School for nearly 2 years. He is very depressed about this and i cant really blame him.
Anyway, being former Army who recieved my first "orders" 10 minutes after graduting from AIT(same as A school) this is rather strange hearing about any service member knowing so much before he has even stepped out of boot camp. So much could happen between now and Christmas. People get hurt, people flunk out of class, people go crazy(lol) so it really makes no sense to me to inform recruits of their destination at such a early stage.
Any info on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Typically, only those in the PACT program find out their first duty station while in BC. They don't actually go to "A" School, but have a few weeks of training instead and may later go to "A" School.
Since it appears that your SR may have contracted within the PACT program, the information within Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks (PACT) Program within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will be of interest to you.

Not sure where they are getting the deploying for 2 years from, but ships don't deploy that long. I would take a guess he got orders overseas and will be there two years. That is different then deploying.

He is claiming he is going on a destroyer ship and that the only contact with the outside world is snail mail? No phone or internet in 2013?
This cant be right? Somebody pulling his leg?

Sailors on Navy vessels do not have internet access or phone contact any time they want and there will be times he will not have contact other than snail mail. Whether or not he does have orders to a destroyer will be clear after PIR and more so when his training after that is complete.

As far as I have studied the longest deployment has been 14months I believe and that was the Bataan. Most don't find out anything till a school. Deployment is Different than being Stationed. for my son they were givin a list of places they would choose first choice second choice and third. They may not even get one of those placements..

I originally heard the same. Deploy for 2 years straight out of A school. His recruit then said he will be out to sea, max, 6 mos at a time. Back to port after that. Home base/port can be anywhere in the world the Navy is. Mine will be deploying as soon as A school is over as well. Sad I won't get to spend any time with my new sailor first :( His official orders will not be gven to him until he graduates PIR. We will see where he goes after that. We hope to stay in the states for home port.

Deployments can be extended for longer than six months, eight to ten is not unusual. But as others have said, until he has orders in hand, there is simply NO way to know if he's deploying or not right away. He could be going to a ship which just returned, or is doing a stint in a dry dock.
Just be patient and ignore Rumor Control. The Navy runs on rumors, so always sit tight until you can verify what you have heard.
