OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Female - African American Hair
Hi all,
My daughter is leaving for basic training on Feb 3 2016. We have been searching the web for African American hair styles for basic training. She does have a perm and typically wears her hair in a bob weave. Any pictures or suggestions would help. Thanks!

RTC is stricter than the fleet, I do not know if she can have extensions. I know for sure wigs are not allowed during boot camp.

General advice for any female SR: Hair has to be practical. Each morning, the division has 30 minutes to get up, make the rack perfectly, shower and dress properly. Gym style showers. No getting up early. At some point, you will be in a pool without a swim cap, be tear gassed and/or pepper sprayed (no one wants that in their hair), wear gas masks/breathing apparatus, and always must wear your headgear properly. In winter, this could include the watchcap (beanie, toque). Product such as gels or hairspray might not be an option, except for PIR. Boot camp is hard on a fussy hairstyle.
Neat and easy are the biggest factors. You can have better hair after boot camp, when there is time to devote to it.

My daughter just wore her hair in a ponytail bun all boot camp after they passed she asked me to ship her some hair and one of her shipmates sewed the hair in for graduation and a school.

Hi my daughter has a Bob also..so I believe that's fine..she still has it..she is in boot camp now..they have products there in the navy exchange for permed hair..lol

Thank you all! I have shared you suggestions with my daughter. She is being very hard headed and wants a braided style. She is sharing pictures styles with her recruiter to see if they will be accepted. I just hope she does not get up there and has to take them out. I say just go with your natural hair. After the swim test gel it back in a pony tail and go. She is such a diva and I hope the Navy will break her of it.

My daughter said that there were girls with braids at bootcamp. They just have to be able to put it up in a bun to wear it daily.

Oh, they will. That is one of the goals of boot camp, to drop the individuality and mold a team. One word about recruiters, they are not always up on what is and is not going to happen at RTC. So asking the recruiter is not 100%. And heaven help her if she gets to boot camp and resists, saying, "My recruiter said ...". That won't help.
There are braided styles in the regulation, so let us know how it goes.
