My son was added to my bank account before he left for BC, and he took the routing number, account number, bank info, with he left. We dit it this way so that I could help him pay his bills while he was gone. I was assured that this first paycheck would be on Jan. 1, but today is the12th, and no money has yet to be deposited into my account. When I talked to his local recruiter to express my concerns, he said that he should have been paid on the 1st and that perhaps my son had elected to put it in the account the Navy offers (and ENCOURAGES). However, I know that my son did not want to do it that way because we discussed it extensively. Should I be concerned that I have not seen a direct deposit from him?

Pay takes a couple pay cycles to hit the account, whichever one he has decided to use. Even though military payday is on the 1st and the 15th, it can take up to four weeks or longer to see the first check. When did he process in at Great Lakes?

Also, uniforms are deducted from the first check, so his pay will initially be quite low.

BTW, Navy Fed CU is not run by the Navy. However, it is extremely convenient to have a credit union with branches worldwide when you are moving around so much. No reason he can't use both his local bank and the credit union.

There is a group here created for new members which may help explain things as they come along. Recruiters know how things are supposed to work, here you'll get how things are working in real time for other moms.

Thank you so much for responding. He processed in at Great Lakes on Dec. 14.
Hi Diane, I would think that maybe he will get a paycheck on the 15th of this month. No guarantees though. I had my son split his check into his home account and his NFCU, that way I was sure that wherever he might be stationed he will have access to his money. Just didnt want to take a chance on him being stationed somewhere and having problems getting money out of a state account. Seems to be working pretty well.
There may be a deposit on the 15th... but then again, this is the Navy and things can get tangled up. A deposit on the 1st would have been surprisingly quick.

If he does go Navy Federal, he can put you on the account. Their online billpay is excellent. I use it, plus a local credit union. Each is very good, using both covers all my bases. Hubby and I are retired Navy, so we've had the account for a very long time. Especially good when it comes time for that VA home loan!
