Hello everyone, I am attending the 2/5/16 PIR and am trying to plan my rental car and have a question about weather. Is it common there for chain restrictions due to snow? I am from the west coast and we commonly have "chains only or 4 wheel drives with snow tires" restrictions when driving. I am not sure how the restrictions work in great lakes. The rental company said they dont provide chains just all weather tires. Your Help is greatly appriciated

MilitarydadCA,
I've lived in Milwaukee and Waukegan and chains are not needed in either city. They do a good job of keeping the roads plowed and salted in both cities. I owned a Chrysler Sebring and never had a bit of problem driving in the winter.
Hello I'm travelling to Great Lakes soon for PIR and I'm taking the train from Midway airport to Great Lakes. It takes about two hours, but you won't need to worry about the snow. I'm renting my car at Great Lakes which was $300.00 cheaper than the car rentals at the airport. Hope this helps.
Just a FYI to help others for anyone that is thinking of renting a car, you might try booking through Costco travel if you have a Costco membership. It is way cheaper than anything else I found online. $78.73 for intermediate car for the 4th thru 7th at ORD. $76.81 from MDW this includes taxes and fees.
I live in the Detroit area and we have traveled to Chicago quite a bit. I have never been on a road that requires chains or snow tires, in fact most of them forbid chains. You don't encounter mountainous areas like you do out west so people generally use all weather tires all year round. I hope this helps.
Exactly! We booked a mini van through Costco and it was $104 total for the entire 4 days we'll be there. That's the cheapest I've ever gotten a rental car before.
Wow what a rate! What company will you actually be renting from?
Budget. We've not rented w/ them before usually do enterprise but w/ the rate we couldn't pass it up. I've read some reviews from that location and they've been really good so fingers crossed we have a good experience.
One more thought occurs to me about warm clothes - borrow from Navy moms! If you're not a member of your area's group, find it and join. We have a great group here in Arizona with members from all over the state. http://navyformoms.com/group/arizonamoms
