Right now I am a girlfriend of a Sailor. We have been together for about two years and we know this is permanent. We have talked about marriage before, and it is definitely going to happen. What kind of things change when you are a Navy Wife instead of a Navy Girlfriend? Do they have less time on sea and more time on shore? Are they more stationary and stationed more closer to you? All the pros and cons that you guys can come up with in this Girlfriend vs. Wife debate I would love to know. Any personal experience would be great too.

Thanks!

The Navy is certainly going to have a long hard look at a spouse who doesn't live with the sailor for years at a time when it is otherwise possible.  Finishing a program is one thing, but to begin a new one?  Very much going to look like you married just to collect benefits.  This happens often enough that it gets investigated if questions arise.

Bumping this up by request.

Semi-annual bump up of the GF or wife discussion.

There's some good stuff buried back in the old discussions. Others, I wonder how their problems were resolved, if they're okay, happy and well.

haha Anti M I started reading this post, and started thinking.. this sounds REALLY familiar... as I read your response I was feeling confused. lol then I saw my own comment and I was thinking wow...I even forgot I commented! lol then saw the date!!

Yeah, I was laughing when I saw how many times I've bumped it up.  I knew it would catch someone by surprise.

I'm glad you stuck around, otherwise there's no continuity here.

hahaha. Definitely caught me off guard!! lol but its ok it happens to me a lot!! lol

thanks! :) I really enjoy passing along what I know and learning new things!

Is there any way for me as a fiance to see if on-base housing is available? He's deployed right now so I'm trying to plan our wedding and a move and housing and everything mostly by myself and he asked me if I had looked into base housing yet...but I don't think I can do that, can I? It's Bremerton WA, if that helps.

You could probably go onto their site for housing for that base (sorry, on mobile so I can't link very well) and see what their housing wait list is. But they won't let you sign up for it (you specifically as the fiancee, or you in general as an engaged couple) until after you're married.

But, you can do a search for BAH calculator and enter the zipcode for the base he's stationed out of, as well as his rank, and it will tell you how much you can expect to get for housing allowance (if you end up not loving on base), so you can start looking into rentals. :-)

I agree with sailorwifenmom... I dont think they will tell you, but if you maybe find a facebook page for the area for spouses some of the folks might know how long the average wait time is available.

I would also say to certainly look into off base housing. :) If you search hard you can find places that are under your BAH to the point that you are saving money. So I agree to google the BAH chart, they will be putting out the new one soon for next year but they havent yet, but you can use the old one to base it around. When I lived in Everett, WA we paid our rent, all our apt bills, our car payment, car insurance, and most of our cell phone bill with BAH. That will also save you some money... we lived in an apt... which usually some of them have great deals like get your first month rent half off or free. Things like that :)

Bumping this up.
