How many of you plan  on or have gone to graduation? It is a long distance for us , my husband has not flown since he was a teenager  and I'm not sure I could get him on a plane anyway!  We are from a small town  so  city traffic seems intimidating to me though my husband is a truck driver. (He HATES traffic, too)  Our son doesn't go to boot camp until Feb 23 ( his 21st birthday!) but I am trying to work this whole thing out in my head. I have look at airfare/hotel/car pkgs and about choked!

my son also leaves for boot camp on the 23rd of feb...I wonder if they'll be together in graduating class...we're from Oregon and do plan on attending graduation..just need to wait to see when it will be to start planning that trip.
You never know....we"ll have to wait and see!

You really do not want to miss his graduation.  This is a huge milestone in his life.  Having been there and experienced this myself I would have to say this is more important than High School Graduation.  You may think it was just 8 weeks but in these 8 weeks your son has grown up more in this short period than he has in the 20 years at home.

I myself have four people to get to great lakes from Miami.  Yes, times are hard but a "DVD" can't even touch on how your son will feel nor how you will feel when you are there.  It truly is the proudest moment you will have and a memorable one for sure for your son.

several tips, Southwest is an awesome choice, you can fly into Midway or Milwaukee, there is the Metralink train that you can take to get to GL. I took it the last time I was there, from Midway, and it was super easy and cost $7.75 to get there (orange line and then metralink). Southwest into Milwaukee is usually (not always) cheaper. The Navy Lodge is roughly a mile from RTC, a walkable distance if needed. They charge $65/night, and have 2 queens and many of the rooms have kitchenettes, so you can save on food that way too. They now offer a bag breakfast the morning of PIR. There are TONS of cabs and you may even be able to connect with another family on here that can help out a bit with transportation. If you can, try really hard to go, you won't regret it. Once you're up there, the fri/sat/sun, the Metralink is $5 for all 3 days, unlimited ride, so, with a bit of cabbing it, you may not even need a car. Best of luck, if you have any questions, feel free to ask, I've been out there 3 times, lol
Hi, I plan on attending graduation. travel plans are arranged (Amtrak) I was wondering if I take the shuttle from the hotel, is there alot of walking and standing?? I can't do alot of both, but I really want to be there for my son. Thanks
the shuttle should drop you off at the door and the walk is not bad. don't know how many divisions are graduating that day but i am sure you will find a seat.  if you wish to go to the NEX then i suggest you take the shuttle back to the hotel and go back in your car or take a taxi....the walk across the base might be too far for you. there is a bigger and better NEX off base that is really nice. also ask at the hotel's front desk if they will let your Sailor come back to the hotel with you on the shuttle....we saved at least one trip that way.
Hi, my son's PIR is April 29. Can we get rooms at the Navy Lodge? I was confused when I was reading the info on their website. It sounded like only Enlisted people could stay?? Do you have a number?? Thanks so much. We will be driving up from NC.
Hi everyone...I'm going to my son's Graduation in Great Lakes on Feb 18th...it is very expensive plus i have never been on a plane...credit cards come in handy....Does anyone know if they will be able to leave and stay with you in the hotel...or if they will be able to sight see...I've never been to Chicago we were going to drive becuz i am afraid to fly but i'm afraid of the snow and road closures...He would be sad if i wasn't there....Does anyone have any advice on what to expect, how to dress for graduation, sight seeing on a budget...a great place for a deep dish pizza...I'm soooo excited to see him...I never thought you could miss someone soooo much.......Have a Happy Wed....Hugs to all of You Mom's out there : )

holly, the new sailors have to stay in a 50 miles radius of GL....Chicago is fine. They can go to the hotel with you BUT have to report back to the ship at night. Is your son a G&G? Where is his A school at?

Holly I just peeked at your profile page and you need to join your PIR group. Lots of info and support there from everyone in your PIR group, including those in your son's division http://www.navyformoms.com/group/pir31811
This is going to sound stupid I'm thinking....What does PIR stand for???
PIR is Pass In Review = graduation....the rcts call it graduation and N4M's all call it PIR
