Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I've been to Hawaii at least 50 times.  Where you want to stay is the Hale Koa hotel.  It's a military hotel right on the Waikiki strip, right next to the Hawaiian Hilton.  Since it's a military hotel, all money goes to the sailors MWR fund.  The hotel is like a 4/5 star hotel.  It is actually built on a base called Fort DeRussy even though you can't even tell it's a base.

On new years 1999/2000 we stayed there for a week.  While at the Hale Koa beach we notice a mob of people looking at us and we didn't know what it was all about.  We found out quick that Justin Timberlake and the rest of the guys from N-sync, along with Britney Spears where just 20 feet from us.  Beleive me, it's an awesome hotel, and very cheap compared to all the other hotels on Waikiki....

If your Sailor is looking for cheap vacation, then these are the one to go to. If you decided to join your Sailor, you get the same price as them (ie it's base on their paygrade). However, you cannot go alone, your Sailor must be with you.

Also, not many people know about this. But.... The biggest time share company, RCI vacations, has got in connections with all the Navy's Morale and Recreaction (MWR) office. They will rent any of the rooms that they have not sold yet throughout the world for only $329 per week. I have use this 4 times and they are great too. Just click on the Space Available button and see what's available.

What's good with the RCI deal is, your Sailor can gift them to whomever. They don't have to be with you (unlike the Armed Forces Recreation Centers). Secondly, some of the $329 goes back into the MWR fund on the base you select. It's a great deal....

I think that must have been very close to the Navy housing I lived in!  And I have stayed in the Kilauea  Camp when we were stationed there and took a week down on Big Island, terrific!

Man, I stayed at Kilauea too.  What people don't realize is you need a winter coat there.  We actually drove up to the snow line and had to play in the snow.  Who would have expected snow in Hawaii? 

I tell you, the big island is 180 degrees different than Oahu.  I like the big island because it is so peaceful and quite....

20 yers in the Navy, and hubby had never been to Hawaii.  I took him to Big Island and he fell  in love.  Been back once, with another trip booked for next year.  Too bad air fare is so crazy. 

If we ever hit the lottery, he wants a small coffee plantation, we could have a guest house and all our young hippie friends could come pick our coffee cherries for us.  LOL, whatta dream.

Hey, the young hippie buddies have energy and supple joints, unlike us old hippie farts.  It isn't hiring, it is gifting a stay in Hawaii in return for their gift of labor.  LOL, and I'm far from conservative... hehehehe.

 

Actually I have several friends who are "WWOOFers" , willing workers on organic farms.  They go work the farms in return for room and board and a chance to study organic farming techniques. There is a certification process, but I am unfamiliar with it.   Hawaii is a very popular destination, and there are an amazing number of small farms who host them.  I had no idea they were out there until we met up with one of our friends who was working near Hilo.

My eyes are a bit tired, vision blurry - read "supple joints" as something similar but with totally different meaning. Better go do my stuff - working hard and not making any money.:( Maybe we should revisit this organic farm idea.

LOL on the joints.

 

I guess I can't explain the concept well... the workers do get compensated, just not in a monetary way, and the seminars and such are documented, then they can theoretically earn a living teaching organic growing techniques to other farmers and food producers.  It makes more sense if you've been living closer to the barter system outside of the mainstream economics.  

 

Sorry, I'll stop now and let the topic go back to vacations.
