Hi guys! My first post on here. I am a 21 year old female, joining the Navy. As of right now, I am trying to lose weight and prepare for MEPS. I weight 158lbs, 5'2", so I definitely have a ways to go before I feel comfortable going to MEPS even. I am extremely excited about joining and going to boot though. To get in shape and lose weight right now, I am doing Beach Body's Insanity. I am on day 1 of 60 right now. Anybody done this and how well/fast does it work?

I'd love to chat with those of you who are waiting to join/have already been through basic. Any tips would be great. Any info of any kind. I've read a bit of the Bluejackets manual online, and am wanting to read the whole thing before going. I am one to be prepared. What are some specific exercises to be familiar with/do before joining? I mean, obviously running and swimming. But specific exercises like scissor kicks, etc. What about some websites specific to Navy stuff?

Also, for the females out there who have been through it, tell me some more of how basic goes. Specifics. I want the nitty gritty info that is true, not glamorized. I've looked at pics and videos, but I know they are mostly staged. How do the showers go and how long do you have? What about the monthly thing, and RX medications? I have pretty bad allergies and sneeze a lot. Can I get them to prescribe me something to help out? And also birth control pills/shots to help out with monthly thing? I would love to be on something that only makes me have 1 period every three months or not at all. Something like that just to help, as I have BAD periods and pms symptoms. Mostly cramping really really bad. I can deal if I have to, but prefer to have a little help there.

My mind is just racing with questions and wonder, so post any info you want. I just ask that you don't be a butt about it. :-)

Thanks!!!

Thanks! Oh another question, is there a way to speed up the shipping out for basic, instead of DEP? I really just want to spend a couple months getting into shape and then go.

cgess - Boot camp isn't like "the biggest loser" tv show.  You don't want to go there if you're out of shape.  It will be the worst thing you can do.  What I've seen in the past is a recruit failing the PFA (the physical fitness test) and then are sent to the "FIT" division (to improve your PFA).  You think 8 weeks in boot camp is a long time, just try that along with 2 months in FIT.  You say "speed up", don't you mean "slow down"?

Not being able to see, call, or be with your bf since your a female (but heck in the new Navy I guess a guy can have that now) for that long will really demotivate you.  In fact, a lot of people will just ask for a discharge, which has life long consequences.  Every form you fill out for any governement position will ask "Do you have prior military service?"  People that are discharged will have to say "Yes".  Which opens up a lot of questions.

Your recruiter should not allow you to ship if you don't meet the minimum standards.  Just be really careful on what you do.

I wouldn't want to ship until I am physically ready and my recruiter definitely wouldn't let me. Other than that, I know not seeing or hearing much from family will be tough, but I am ready for that. At least I am pretty sure that I am. I will deal with that part as it comes. I am married and my husband is going to join as well sometime. I'd rather speed up the process so that as soon as I am physically ready, I can go and get that part over with. I'm pretty excited about it and starting the next chapter of my life. It will be hard, but I'm ready to fight for it. I've wanted to join the Navy for over 7 years. I can do it.

Thank you very very much for the reply! Especially the links.

Oh ok. Sweet! I haven't talked to him in a while. He said that as soon as I get to the minimum weight/bmi reqs, to check back and then I'll go to MEPS. Well, and to check in if I need anything or have questions. I just haven't gotten back around to going back up there yet. I wasn't sure if that would affect my ship date or not. I thought it was just 6-8 months no matter what. Thanks!

Legally the recruiter can not give you a work out plan or even help you loose weight as that is a liablity waiting to happen.  You can't go to MEPS either until you are with in standards.

Recommend you talk with your doctor for a healthy way to loose weight, it will take time..you didn't gain it overnight you aren't going to loose it overnight.
