Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

My daughter's health insurance will end when her college classes end this week.  She leaves for BC in August.  When will the Navy's health insurance coverage begin?  Should I get COBRA coverage until the end of BC?

She'll be taken care of for the minor stuff during BC but won't get TriCare (the Navy version of health care) until she becomes a sailor (after battlestations) so it might be a good idea to get COBRA coverage to tied her over. Plus if she gets injured at BC and can't continue for some reason (don't want to scare you but it does happen) then she'd need her own insurance.

what is battlestations? My son will have our coverage until the Dec 31 of the year he turns 24. He will be 23 when he goes to GL and then heads for Seal training...
Just left the HR office - COBRA is $438 a month.... I'm looking for other options. I checked into "Obama Care" - the new plan just passed into law... It is not availble until October, October is our company's enrollment date.
"Battlestations" is the last big test before they graduate. It's a 24 hour adventure on a mock-up of a ship so realistic that they even have the smells and noises they'd have on a real ship. It's a test of everything they've learned as a team during boot camp. It's done in the final week, often one or 2 days before PIR. If they pass (and 99% of them do) then they go to a capping ceremony where they're awarded their "Navy" ball caps to replace their "recruit" caps. The graduation ceremony is really just frosting on the cake. Once they get their written orders for the next step in their training, they should be covered medically by the Navy Tri-care plan.

I know that doesn't help your medical insurance problem so your daughter may have to do what my son did, go without insurance for a few months and hope nothing happens.
My brother in law is an insurance agent. He is looking at the options for me. He thinks with the new changes in health care that she will be able to remain on my insurance. My employer does not agree. We are trying to get that in writing. He has been able to talk to "higher ups" at the insurance company.

If not, he knows that she can get temp coverage for 3 months- which is not long enough. At least it’s a start. If I have counted the weeks correct her PIR should be in early Oct. I plan to buy coverage until the end of Oct - just in case there is a problem. I filled some prescriptions for as long as I could and purchase contacts for her. My insurance has dental & vision. We have good insurance, but I ends as soon as they turn 19 or graduate/stop attending school.

I've looked at other ship/PIR dates on here. I've made a guess and added a few weeks. I think I can pay for an additional month as needed. I know I can pick her back up on my insurance in October.
