Hello!  My name is Julie and I'm so glad to have found you all.  My son Evan just left this morning and will be staying at a hotel tonight and going to Great Lakes tomorrow.  He is going to be in Interior Communications.  I have another son who has been in for about 12 years and he is a Nuke.  It's been so long since the last one went in that it's all new to me, all except the sound of cadence coming to the door of the hangar at PIR and the feeling of watching those sailors marching in.  That's something you never, ever forget!  Anyway, thanks so much for being here and I already have a question.  I had it in my mind that boot camp is eight weeks but the sample form letter I just read said 7 weeks.  So, if Evan gets there tomorrow and his full week starts on Monday, will PIR be 8/31 or 9/7?  Trying to decide who he should put on his list and my younger son could probably go if it's on the 31st.  Thanks!

He won't know for sure until he gets to bootcamp and gets assigned a division.  bootcamp can be anywhere from 7-10 weeks...the 7 week bootcamps are normally on those over the major holiday in Dec...all the rest are 8-10 weeks.  Yes I said 8-10 weeks.  The extra days are processing days....it could be a week or more for a division to forum up and for them to offically start their bootcamp training.

As far as who goes to bootcamp, it is up to the recruit who they want to put on the list.  Active duty and Retiree's with the proper ID get in with out being on the list, as do those 12 and under.  All others must be on the list the recruit turns in while he is in bootcamp

Hi Angie, and thanks for your reply!  He had 3 people in mind so far and he was waiting to put his younger brother until we know if school would be in session at PIR. But, since his older brother is active duty and doesn't have to be on the list to attend, this makes it easier.  Thanks for that info.

If his older brother goes he MUST be in his dress unifrom.

He must be in his dress uniform if he chooses to wear his uniform. Active duty military do not have to be in uniform to attend without being on the list, but he must present current Military ID.  (See http://bootcamp.navy.mil/ad_military_retirees.asp.)

Angie, I respectfully disagree with you about the 7 week bootcamps being in December.  That is when recruits are more likely to have 9-10 weeks in boot camp, especially if there is skipped week where there is no PIR right after the recruit arrived.  The 7 1/2 weeks can happen any week.  We see Push divisions in at least 2 divisions at least once almost every month.  It all depends on how quickly the divisions form.  Those with 7 1/2 week tend to arrive on a Monday (and sometimes Tuesday) to complete a division that began filling the previous week.

Julie, your SR will most likely have PIR on 09/07/2012, but it could be the week before (less likely when arriving on a Wednesday) or the week after.  You will have to wait for the form letter to know for sure or if you get the address from the recruiter for someone else with a loved one in that division or the brother division, if there is one, to get the form letter.

Hi Julie,

My name is Elaine and my son Jeff left this morning for bootcamp from Boston Ma.  Looking forward to sharing this experience with others in the same boat

Hi Elaine!  I am so glad to have others here with sons/daughters leaving the same time as Evan.  I just talked to him and he sounds very excited but nervous!  I hope he can relax and get some sleep. :(
