Help!!! My son just called and said he can't come home for Christmas

My son just called and said that they moved his insurv up to Christmas and he can't come home. (Sasebo, Japan).  I confused and hurt.  They told him he could take a week in September, but that would include his 3 plus days of travel and he doesn't want to do this.  Can the Navy just cancel leave like that and not give the sailors adequate time to travel back to the USA?  Very disappointed...I thought the it was their right to have 30 days of leave.  We were also of the understanding that his travel back to the states would be provided for.  Please advise me what is going on....Concerned MOM

Because his recruiter told us his leave was paid for......I have offered to fly there, but my son has said he couldn't get leave time to spend w/me. (It was planned I would go this summer). I just don't know what is going on....I know it is his "right" to have 30 days of leave each year. He is only 20 years old and communication can get a little confused when you're trying to help someone 3500 miles away. Only thing he has talk about is how he hasn't had a day off because of something called insurv and that now they pushed it back to Christmas when he had arranged to come home. I AM A MOM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON!!!!!!!!! I AM NOT MILITARY, HAVE KNOW IDEA ABOUT THE MILITARY, AND WOULD LIKE SOMEONE BESIDES A TWENTY YEAR OLD MAN TO EXPLAIN TO A 47 YEAR OLD WOMAN WHAT IS GOING ON!!!!!
A sailor can accumulate up to 60 days of leave before they lose it. If they are at that point, the command can extend their ability to have more than 60 days on the books. So while he earns 30 days of leave each year, he doesn't have the "right" to take all 30 at once. Usually you get a week here or two weeks there off, at the convenience of the Navy. It is entirely possible to not be granted leave for two years! The ships don't like to do that, but it is legal. His command offered September, he didn't take it. He might not get leave for a good long while. Learn this phrase well, "Needs of the Navy". It will rule his life.

And yes, I have worked 20 hour days for weeks on end when my command had a major inspection. It happens, you roll with it. Some of us here who are replying have done this. We didn't like it, but we did it.

Getting a paid for flight home from Japan and 30 days leave happens between commands during a PCS move, not for leave. You probably misunderstood the fine detail of that.

You think cancelling leave is bad, they can call them back while they are on leave.
I'm so sorry your'e having this stress. I can't answer your question but here is a link to a group that may help Just click on the http address http://www.navyformoms.com/group/japanmoms
This year will be my fourth Christmas without my Sailor. We just celebrate it when we can! I hope you have an artificial tree to use in September.
I too have a young sailor in sasebo on the Tortuga and she cannot get leave this year either and is really struggling with homesickness. But no leave is garanteed specially in hi defcom timeframes and exspecially if they have a big inspection coming up. Sounds to me like there's a bit of problems there with commands at least the tortuga's and they are trying to shape up and pass inspections and if there is one struggler in the fleet of ships they all get looked at pretty hard. I too miss my girl and she us and is totally down so we've had some real interesting early morning /late at night calls. But as long as they can still call and communicate I think we are very lucky to have that I had few calls home when I was stationed overseas and no email or skyp. The navy has never paid for leave home trips unless you can get them to route you via home while you are tranfering to a new duty station keep looking for flights for yourself though and go anyway he/she has off days that they can visit with you and just knowing your on Island will help. I too am looking for a inexpensive flight to fly there if she doesnt snap out of it lol. good luck and I understand your frustrations....
