How do you cope when your son or daughter is away on their Birthday?

Today is my son's birthday, I have not heard from him in a couple of days, he is on the USS Carl Vinson and I know this is a mission of compassion but today I feel selfish and want to spend time with him. So please tell me how do any of you cope.

I know how you feel. First thing I did was thank the Lord for all the birthdays we got to share. Then I packed him a "Birthday" box. I put in party favors, about 12, thought some of his friends would get a laugh also. I place a box of snack cakes (birthday cake wouldn't travel well). A candle, and a "Happy Birhday" banner. Also a personal gift, and a card of course. He lovd it.
james turned 20 on mon. the 25 in bootcamp my biggest fear is that he didnt get any mail that day im bringing a cake to graduation!!!!!!
What a great idea! Thank you! My baby sister is in bootcamp right now. Her PIR date is this Friday, April 9...but her 21st birthday was in March while she was there. We are very close, so it was hard for me to miss such a special birthday with her. I will be taking a cake for sure!!
My son Lance is in bc now, May 10, and his birthday was on Mother's Day, May 9th. He was actually born on Mother's Day. The best gift I'd ever received! His graduation will be in June; so, I can't carry a cake on the plane from TX; so, I'll take the party stuff and celebrate then. Thank you so much for the Great Ideas! It is so hard not celebrating his 25th. He graduated college and then joined. I am so glad to have this forum to talk this out!!! I miss him soooooo much!
My daughter turned 23 during training. At the end, all of the birthday guys and gals went out to dinner to celebrate. We sent a flood of cards and that helped make it special for her. We, of course, were sad not to be able to give her a hug but we gave her lots of hugs when training was over! It's one of those "apron strings moments" that I'm trying to get used to.
In your head, just sing Happy Birthday all day long.
Jenna had her BDay in boot camp and the girls sang to her :)
well you just try and take one day at a time.....missed birtdays, christmas holidays and all. its not going to be the same anymore.
they have grown up and away from us now. i think us moms miss the important days more than they do!!! right now their lifes are so
different. its probably hard for them to be away from home too. but they will never admit it i'm sure. they love their new found independence....take care and enjoy him when he does come home...
Thank you everyone for replying to my question, and fear as well as sadness. This was uplifting.
I know how you feel. My son graduated boot camp in September and turned 18 while there. He was the baby of his class, there were things I always did at 12:15 am because that is when he was born. Being in boot camp I couldn't call or email I just hoped the card and pics we took got there in time. I really think he survived it better than I did but that's how we are. Now he is away on the USS Bataan in Haiti. Just know they all have angels watching over them and it does get easier. I am a proud mom. Theresa
they featured the uss carl vinson on the military station last night. so interesting! i caught the show towards the end . i pray that someone here got to see their love ones. my son is on the uss truman. he was on the uss theodore roosevelt but his first ship was the uss nimitz. but come christmas, with God'd Grace he'll be on the uss mom!. have a great week everyone.
Having raised our children in the military and both of them now in the Military, we learned that holidays did not have to just fall on the day they really are. But you celebrate them when you can. We have had Thanksgiving the Sunday before and Christmas several days later than December25th. Nothing changed. We celebrated our sons 30th BD a week before because he would be on duty the day of...... Love and commitment is all that is needed!
