OK, so I wasn't the biggest fan 3 weeks ago when my SR went off to boot camp. As a matter of fact, I was rather disgruntled (but tried to hide it in front of him). His beloved grandfather (my husband's dad) died yesterday and we were really not sure whether to write and tell SR, wait for graduation, or call the Red Cross and let the Navy handle it. We knew SR would be devastated because he was very close to his grandpa.
We got advice here (thank you all!) and called the Red Cross. They contacted the Navy Officers. SR was taken aside, away from all the other recruits, and was able to call us and talk. He was crying but was with a chaplain who was there for support. After all the craziness and coldness of the robot call, "the box," and form letter coupled with dealing with a dying parent, we were just so relieved that the Navy took care of our SR in a time of loss. It was a huge relief.
So, today I'll say, "Yay, Navy. Anchors aweigh!" :-)

The Red Cross does an excellent job. I was in Alaska many yrs ago and then active duty when I got a call about my mom. I was home in 24 hrs. Yes, the military does a great job handling these matters. My daughter now is BC, she got to GL feb. 14th. I got the box and now waiting for the letter. Even though I was active duty many yrs ago, I still cried my eyes out when she left. However, I know this is the best decision she has ever made. I am a proud Navy BC Mom.
