So here's my story. I am 19 years old, I have always been very good in school (always had a 4.0 or something near it). I am very close to obtaining an associates degree and at the very least am attending college in the Fall to finish it. I'm already registered and everything. Towards the end of this last Spring semester, something went off in my mind that prompted me to start researching the Navy and Air Force websites... Looking at the different jobs, what the benefits are, etc. I'm not quite sure what prompted this search. Two years ago and even a year ago I never would have considered this for myself. Now it seems like an amazing option that I am very near reaching for and going with.
I have seen a recruiter twice now. The first time I went in and asked for some general information, answered some questions, and took an ASVAB pretest. The second time I went in to take the ASVAB (I scored a 93). This next week I am going in to sign some paperwork and turn in a security clearance application. This has all spanned a little over two months. I am most interested in one of the Cryptology jobs... CTR and CTN look most interesting to me. Or Intelligence Specialist (IS). I had been tentatively thinking about going to MEPS soon, and when my recruiter asked me when I was wanting to go... Things started to feel a lot more real. And rushed. I am perfectly aware that I don't have to rush to MEPS just because my recruiter is wanting me to. However, because I have already been thinking about it, I wonder if maybe I am ready. One of my questions is whether you guys think two months of constant research (seriously constant, every bit of my free time) is enough to be ready for something that will be my life for four years?
Now to help your answer, here is a bit of my background. I do not come from a military family. Like I said, I have never really considered this heavily until recently. My parents want to make sure I know that I have other options. Paying for college isn't an issue. For me personally, I feel like I have lost some of my motivation and have become a bit more lazy than I would like to be. I also am not sure what I want to major in... which is why I am interested in joining now (before I transfer to another college to finish a degree). What draws me to the military is the discipline, structure, hard work, physical fitness, guaranteed job, and benefits, etc. Just because my parents can pay for my college, doesn't mean that I want them to. If I can work hard for it and do it on my own by earning the GI Bill, I would love that. I also only have one sister who is 15 years older than me and lives in Germany. So I grew up mostly as an only child. I know that people in the military grow some of the strongest bonds out there. I would love to be a part of that family and gain all of those brothers and sisters.
My original plan was to wait until the semester started to go to MEPS ( just so I could see and make sure that I am really ready to take the break from college). I know I have felt this way about college for a while though. All I have known my whole life is school. I want to work for a while. But just quitting school and working at a restaurant isn't enough. Navy would look better later on, give me money to finish my degree when I'm out, and be more fulfilling for myself.
I feel like I am ready, but do I sound ready to you all? Are my reasons good reasons? Am I crazy for wanting to take a break from college, despite my high grades, to join the Navy? Also, this has been a hard decision for my parents to swallow. They are supportive, but were definitely shocked initially. Now I am nervous about how to tell them I want to go to MEPS soon and finalize this decision... HELP! I just want some opinions and fresh voices.

The SF-86 form that you need filled out takes a really long time. You might want to start filling it out now because there is no way you'll be able to do it in the recruiters office.

Lastly, since you're a depper, I would really like to talk to you over at NavyDEP.com. I want to know a little bit more of why you want to be a CTR or a CTN. They are totally different jobs.
btw: I'm a retire CTM, and my family is all CT's.....
I have already filled out the application. I just need to turn it in to my recruiter. The paperwork I need to sign is my actual application to the Navy I believe. I am not actually in a DEP yet. I think my recruiter just wants to get the ball rolling, because if I am correct I am pretty sure the background investigation can take quite a long time?
CTN is what interested me the most, but I wanted to know if it is required that I sign a 6 year contract for it. This is the reason I would go for CTR, because I would only have to sign a 4 year contract. 4 years is something that I am more comfortable with because if I go in I want to make sure Navy life is for me. If I absolutely love my first four years I would stick with it and re-enlist. My plan at this point however is to do 4 years and go back to school afterward though.
It doesn't matter if you are in DEP yet...you can go join that website and ask questions. That is more the forum for you, as you are trying to join the Navy. This website is more for family of loved ones.
ok. thank you! I will try over there
