Hello out there. I'm hoping this website will be a helpful resource because my boyfriend Mike is currently in boot camp, and before he left we both decided that I would move to Charleston, SC to be with him while he is in A school. Unfortunately, I have no idea about SC. I've lived in Nashville, TN for 4 years, and I'm hoping that someone already in that area can tell me the best places to look for in moving. There is a catch, I have three cats and a dog that were left to me, and I don't have any intention of getting rid of them. I've read some forums on here about wives being able to live on base, but I was also wondering if girlfriends could to. I was assuming that we couldn't, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask! :) I'm so thankful that this source is out here for women who have many questions that their men don't even have the answer to yet! Thanks so much!!!!- Ashlie

I hate to tell you this, but the Navy does not recognize the girlfriend, boyfriend or fiancee as anything. If your going to be moving out here then the Navy will not assist you in anyway. You will not be allowed in base housing as a military member, but it is privatized and you can rent it with a standard lease, but I don't know the going rates. Your boyfriend will not be authorized to live out in town during A school unless he is married. Additionally, if he is going to A school to become a Nuke then he will not be allowed off base from Monday-Thursaday at all for the first few weeks (only in uniform on the weekends), after that he will always have to be back in his BEQ room by 12:15 PM on Sunday-Thursday and he will need specific permission with a chit to stay off base over night. He will be authorized to move out into town when he goes to Prototype for his last phase in training.
As far as apartments in the area and their pet policies goes, search on the internet for that. Your boyfriend can help with this by talking to Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) for information. The area for the Base itself is actually Goose Creek, SC. The towns in the close area are Ladson, North Charleston, Summerville and Monck's Corner. I know the average rent in the area for a 3 bedroom house is between $1000-1500 range.

My advice is don't move without a plan and a reason other then your boyfriend is here. Either enroll in one of the local colleges or find a job here BEFORE you come out. He will be very busy in school with classes lasting 9 hours a day, PT for 1 hour 3 times a week and an extra 15-35 hours of study a week to be done in the school building. Without something going on in your world you'll hate being here and will become unhappy with your situation and boyfriend.

SimplyHired.com says the following about the local economy here: "Goose Creek Job Salaries: According to government data, the average salary for jobs in Goose Creek, South Carolina is $27,860, and the median income of households in Goose Creek was $45,919. Goose Creek has an unemployment rate of 4.4%"
EMC said it all (he's a great resource). I think he meant "12:15 AM", not PM. The fact that you have a job lined up here is great. I suggest you join the "Nuke School Charleston" group on here :) It's full of wives, fiancees, and gfs of nukes here on base. Great support group and place for answers. There's also "NUKE moms" group, and the "Nuke Wives" group, but the NSC group is most active for us significant others :)
Thanks!! I will do that!!
LOL, sorry, I tried to use "civilian" speak, I guess its been to long, 0015 for all us military types.
lol. It's all good. I had a feeling that's what you meant!!
