My son is leaving on August 24th for bootcamp.  He was accepted into the Nuke Program, has been in DEP since December 2nd and was given a sign on bonus. He has always been very athletic, captain of the Basketball, Football and Baseball teams or 2 years...6'5" and about 215. (Don't know if that's relevant) Before seriously thinking of the Navy he wanted to be a Sports Physical Therapist and initially was conidering ROTC .  Aways wanted to do something athletic with his life, not sit behind a desk. He loves Math & Science and in my heart I know he would do very well in the Nuke program.

He scored very high on the ASVAB and was offered a job while at MEPS, which was very exciting to him.  Of course I liked this becuase if he's in the Nuke Program he would be relatively safe.  He recently went to a Chief's re-enlistment and met some other DEP guys that were in Spec-Ops...now he's wanting to change jobs.

My husband was in the Navy 20 years ago and is not wanting him to ask his recruiter about the possibility because it will look like he can't make a decision.  My hubby also says once you sign on the line your stuck in that job.  One of the DEP guys told him that until he leaves he can still change jobs.

It's Saturday and Daniel (my son) cannot call his recruiter today so I'm hoping to find out if it's even possible to change jobs after swearing ...  Also they must really want him in the Nuke program if they gave a sign on bonus??? Or am I thinking too much?  Can anyone help answer these questions?

Thank you sooooo much!

Not positive - but I'm pretty sure he is not stuck in the "job" until he signs again the day he leaves for boot camp. Also, special ops also gives bonuses - so. . . . .

Both programs are relatively ROUGH!! Good Luck to your son!
Thank you so much for replying...that's what he's been hearing too.

Anyone know if there are positions in the SEAL's? I thought there were a very limited number chosen and everything I'm reading on this site states the Navy is full, so to speak.

Great....now how do I convince him it's not worth it??? He wants it so bad. If I could only convice him to get through the Nuke program...he'll only be 24 after his 6 years...and then he can try to change, if he even wants to then.
My son is also very athletic (football, wrestling, baseball) and considered SEALs. It is my understanding that they get a rate first and change sometime before PIR. I'm not exactly sure. My son was going to school to be a Heath/PE teacher so that he could coach. Big change, huh?
My son is totally in this group, bless his heart. It's been one thing after another for 3.5 years (BDCP) and he's gone from OCS and aviation to waiting 7 months for entry to Nuc school, to entering boot camp with 5 days notice unrated - today. He just sent the last text message that he was at the gates. No idea what he'll end up doing - we only half joke that he'll probably be scrubbing the bilge somewhere!

Love my kid but recognize that he has probably not managed his budding Navy career as well as he could have. He wants to blame his recruiters/command but bottom line it sure seems like these kids need to be very pro-active and on the ball.
Hoppi, My son is in the same situation as the original poster. Except he wants Navy Diver.
DEP until March 30, 2011, signed for a DC and is now working toward a Navy Diver contract instead. With his training and his improvement with his times, an Officer at training said he is well on his way for a contract in the fall.

If, big if, he fail's out of Navy Diver at Boot Camp or A school, can he go back to the original DC, or will he be subjected to any job available at that time.

Thanks so much, all of your information is so helpful.
Ozzy Hoppi will be along soon to answer your question. She's great isn't she. I have a group that may help prepare you as well as your son for boot camp, answer some questions, etc

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/deppersinbutnotyet read some of the discussions for good info

Also go to YouTube and search Navy boot camp, graduation, Battlestations21 (CNN has a good one)...maybe even try Navy Divers

There's a lot of good info on this site as well.
Thanks JessicaB, I will definitely look at all of those sights.

Just when I think I know what is going on, someone post's a new question that I have not thought of! I have been plowing through N4M's, however, have not gone to YouTube. Thanks again.
Thank you so much Hoppi, I appreciate the information, it's what I thought it would be.

What is EOD? So do you mean that Navy Diver's are overall a group pretty good guy's?
