My son is in as a reservist, but I'm not sure how much info I can give you. As a reservist, he's gone through regular BC and is sitting and waiting to class up at A school. Once he's through school, he will return back to our state and be attached to a reserves unit about 2 1/2 hours away. He was told to expect to be activated twice during his 6 yr contract--that will depend on the rate you sign up for. As a reservist, he'll drill once a month and go active for 2 weeks/yr. His intent is to do this while he finishes his last two years of college and then try to go active or at least active reserve status once he graduates from college. So far, his biggest disappointments have been that many of the specialized fields of interests for his rate are closed to him because he's not active duty--at BC, he qualified for but was not allowed to train with the 800 div nor does it appear that he can do helos as aircrew because he's not active duty. Unfortunately, his recruiter didn't understand the limitations reserve status has for training opportunities. That being said, it is a GREAT way to get a taste of military life and commitment, and yet you are home and leading an otherwise normal life during the month once you graduate from A school. Good luck in making your decision!
Thank you everyone for the advice and input!! This helps a lot, its just a huge step and i need to make sure this is the decision i want to make!!
