I'm not sure how they handle the Christmas holiday and graduation but keep in mind that the length of boot camp can vary depending on how long it takes the recruit to go through the initial phase (physical, getting issued stuff, getting assigned to a company, etc.). My son went through last year and was finished in just under eight weeks while others take nine weeks or more. I think too that the basic training phase isn't locked into an exact time scheme but a bit flexible so long as all training areas are covered. There may be some here with better information for you.
I'm not sure but my son leaves on Nov 16th so I am just preparing myself to have Christmas without him this year. And his birthday (Dec 26th). This is going to be a hard one......
My son is leaving October 25th and I am hoping for PIR on 12-17-10. I don't think he can come home before being shipped to his school in FL but it would be nice to see him before Christmas. How is your daughter doing with the depper meetings. My son hasn't had any yet but will be going next week.
Thanks, Jenny, that would be so nice if it was on the 17th. Wow, it seems like such a long time before he leaves but I know it will go so fast. Just wanted to mention how great the videos are here. This morning I watched the one called "Navy Racks - Boot Camp". Great video. "Boot Camp 1 and 2" are also good. Kathy
Hi,
I don't know if this helps any but my son left for Boot Camp on November 3rd and graduated on December 30th, 2009.
On Christmas day, the guys in my son's divison got to call home and talk practically the whole day. They were all so excited that they gave them phones and let them call anyone they wanted to call. They also had a special dinner and the guys seemed to enjoy it very much. We felt like that was the BEST Christmas present ever when he called Christmas morning. Eight weeks seems like forever when you can't talk to them. Boot Camp is hard but they get through it. It is pretty cold in Chicago if that's where the graduation is..... so be prepared.
If you need advise on where to stay... we stayed in Gurnee at the Fairfield Inn. Right across from the Gurnee Mall. Lots of great restaurants in the area and only about 5 - 10 miles from the base. Fairfield Inn was nice and everyone was very friendly.
Linda, thanks for the information. You were there in the winter and I wanted to ask you what you could do with your grad while there. I have heard the "Pier" is closed and I would think also "six flags". I would love to just watch the snow fall but he would probably prefer doing something fun. He could be a a grad n go but I like to be prepared one way or another. Kathy
