He has been talking about joining several different times however i never took him seriously but now he is wanting to talk to a recruiter. my dad was in the marines and i have always made statements that he should look into the navy now the time has come and i am proud but also he is my only child and the letting go is so hard. i guess my question is: is this to early for us to start talking to a recruiter? please advise i feel so in the dark here...

It's never too early to start talking to a recruiter. Even though he can't join until he graduates from high school, he can get info on what he'd be interested in doing, explore possiblities. Does he have some idea of what he'd like to do? Tell him that although he still has a long time until he can join, if he gets good grades and stays in good physical shape, when the time comes it'll be easier to get in and get the job he wants. Knowledge is power, so talk to a recruiter and gain as much knowledge as possible.
Thank you for your response it has helped a lot. I was completely stunned when my son (Caleb) told me that he was interested in joining but also so proud. This is scary for me he is my only child so I will be calling on everyone a lot for help.

Again Thank You,
Margaret
Thanks, and yes he is interested in Law. We are also looking into the ROTC program while in high school. His school that he attends now doesn't offer the program but the next town does. Is that something that will help while he is in high school?

Margaret
My son was in his NJROTC program in high school. Much of what they learn in this program makes DEP and boot camp easier. If the program is open to him, allow him to try it out (can't hurt)! Definately encourage him to be (and do) his best at all times. Look into the ASVAB (the test that determines what rates will be open to him as an enlisted sailor). With an interest in Law, (assuming not law enforcement), look into JAG and what it takes to be involved. I would assume he would need to look into becoming an officer, which means college for the most part. My best to you and your son as you begin this journey.
By the way, my son is my only...they have to live there own life and I feel the Navy is a great place to get that start.
