Once my fiancé gets back from boot camp we plan on going to the court house to get married before he has to leave for A school. Do we need our marriage license for me to be able to get my ID? And how does the POA work when it comes to looking for a place to live? In his letters he says he thinks he'll only a few days to come home before he has to report back. Will we have enough time to get everything done?

The exception would be those who graduate right before the holiday stand down, and who actually do go home on leave during that time.  When is his PIR?

IF that is the case, then you just marry, but do not expect the Navy to move you to where he is going to A school.  Most of the schools are too short to be accompanied.  While there are a few exceptions, you still do not get a paid move because you were not married before boot camp. However, you would most likely be included on his orders to his first duty station after school.  There is a reasonable chance you will just stay behind until he is done with school.  What is his rating going to be?  (his potential job, not his paygrade).  Also, most schools do not allow the students to live offbase with a spouse.

Once you do get married (whenever that may be), he must enroll you in the DEERS system, start you on Tricare (health insurance), and start the paperwork for your ID card.  He needs the marriage license and your birth certificate and SSN for that.  Once he has initiated the form DD 1142, you use that, plus your driver's license and SSN card,  to get your military ID.   He does not need to be with you to get the ID card, but it helps.

So his PIR is Dec. 5th. In his last letter he said he thinks he'll get a few days of holiday leave. So I figured we'd get married then. But I've heard it takes a few days to be your actual marriage license so I was curious what happens if it's not ready by the time he has to go back.
Maybe get married when he is in Aschool? Do it on a weekend and have everything ready...
A friday afternoon..
