He should ask them about doing the swim instead of the run.  Craig, who posts here, has a lot of info about that.

Wait a minute! I'm intrigued here. Are you telling me the sailors can do the swim instead of the run? Can't imagine my son wouldn't be all over this, considering he was a swimmer and life guard, but hates running. Where's some info to send him on this?

I know they can do it in the fleet, not sure about boot camp or in A school.

Scroll down to table 2, they list a swim.  I know they do stationary bike and elliptical machine too.  A "cardio-respitory event" is what it is called.

c. Alternate Cardio Events. The swim, elliptical and bike

are alternate cardio events. Participation in an alternative

cardio-respiratory event is not an entitlement. The

but it also states...

b. When the BCA is “passed” and one or more PRT event is

medically waived, the overall score of the PFA is “partial

pass.”

I dunno. As is much military speak, I can't tell if you actually can or can't.

While in Great Lakes for them to get off of LIMDU they must do the run..why you may ask...is that out in the middle of the ocean if they have to do the PFA they have to do the run as not all ships have the bike...nor can they mark off the proper distance in the ocean to do the swim.

While in bootcamp they also have to do the run..for same reason as above.

Also not all commands allow people to do the alternate's (bike or swim) due to not having access to those pieces of equipment.

Knees are pretty important...as being on a ship..you go up and down steel ladders all day long, if you can't hack it you can't be in the Navy

He just needs to keep doing what the doc's tell him to do...sorry to say after a certain time, if he isn't getting better...yes they will separate him

Alternate Cardio are up to the CO's discretion. He can request to do alternate cardio but that is up the the Medical officer to recommend. Also he is put on a LIMDU status to see if conditions improves, if it does not he may be recommended for Med Board to see if he is fit to continue service. It is best that he continues whatever therapy or treatment and hopefully he gets better soon. Good luck!
