This has really got me perplexed! My son has had a rash since December in Pre-buds. At this point he has completed A school in GL and was put on med hold because of this same rash. He's taken the allergy meds recommended and anticipated to be taken off med hold and issued orders this week. Well, instead, he was told that with his chronic hives/rash he needs to be put on medical separation. OK...can anyone tell me anything about this process? This is not a pre-existing condition and didn't keep him from his buds training or any of his GSM training. Does he have any recourse? Does anyone have experience with this? Looking for answers from this amazing N4M community...

IF he has been in longer than 180 days he will go through a process (well really his medical record will not him physically). If the doctors see he is unfit for the military, they will separate him. As far as recourse, not really unless he finds a cure for his chronic medical issues. How long was he on med hold for?
Thanks for your reply Angie. He was on med hold for less than a month (not sure of the exact days) and he has been in the Navy since early October. His medical issue is a skin allergy I'm guessing. I think that you're right about his medical records going through the process.
lol, I know I am right I went through the process :) Though mine was much different than his will be as I was in for 15 years and was retired due to an accident in the Navy.
When they are have medical issues and are still at the school commands the commands have an easier way to separate the Sailor than if they where in the fleet. (sorry, but that is the case)
Tell him to get copies of all his medical paper work as once he is separated it is the Navy's and it can take up to a year to get copies of the paper work.
Yes, he will need all his paperwork for the VA application process. He should jump on that as soon as he's separated (unless they decide to keep him).
Thanks to both of you! I didn't think about the copies yet... good advice that I will pass on immediately. I am very grateful to the dedication you put into this site. You help ease very desperate minds.
I need to continue this post, now almost 5 years later, for all of you who are going through the struggles and pain of paths that don't go where your sailor wishes. My sailor was medically separated from the Navy after almost completing 1 year. He was crushed. His only focus was getting back into the military. After 5 years, he has graduated from college and will be joining the USMC as an officer. It wasn't easy. He was rejected many times. But, I need you to know that if your child wants this military path enough, hard work and perseverance will pay off. These journeys are heartbreaking, but also so very rewarding.
Thanks for sharing. Best wishes to him on his new journey.

Here are 2 sites for parents with Marines: http://www.marineparents.com and http://marinefamilynetwork.com/. Perhaps one of them will help you. I have no personal knowledge of either of them. I think that they are actually the same group now, just two different ways to get to the same thing.
